What Is a Generational Curse?

A generational curse is a recurring cycle of sin, oppression, disease, or tragedy passed down from one generation to the next due to the unrepentant sins of our forefathers. These spiritual issues may not be your fault, but they can become your bondage if left unaddressed. They act like familiar spirits moving from parent to child until someone finally says, “Enough.”

A Biblical Example: Abraham’s Family Line

Let’s examine the spiritual pattern of lying in Abraham’s lineage:

• Abraham lied to Pharaoh, saying Sarah was his sister, fearing for his life (Genesis 12).

• Abraham repeated the lie with King Abimelech (Genesis 20).

• Isaac, his son, told the same lie to another King Abimelech about Rebekah (Genesis 26).

• Rebekah, Isaac’s wife, later conspired with Jacob to deceive Isaac.

• Jacob’s sons lied to him about Joseph’s fate, staging his death when he was actually sold into slavery (Genesis 37).

Do you see the pattern? Lying, fear, and deception passed through four generations—from Abraham all the way to Jacob’s sons. These weren’t isolated incidents. This was a generational curse.

Christ and the Curse of the Law

Jesus did not abolish the law—He fulfilled it (Matthew 5:17). Satan remains the executor of the curse when we break God’s laws. But through Jesus’ death on the cross, the curse no longer has legal authority over you if you repent and walk in obedience.

Obedience is the key to appropriating the freedom Jesus bought for you.

The Link Between Disease and Generational Sin

Have you noticed that doctors ask for your family's medical history? That's because diseases tend to “run in families.” But the Bible reveals a more profound spiritual truth: many diseases are manifestations of generational curses—rooted in fear, trauma, bitterness, or sin.

Disease is not a blessing; it’s a shadow of Satan’s kingdom, not God's.
The solution isn’t just medical—it’s spiritual.

Deuteronomy 28 outlines the blessings of obedience and the curses of disobedience. Mental illness, autoimmune disorders, poverty, infertility, and emotional instability can all be symptoms of spiritual inheritance through generational sin.

Science Confirms What the Bible Teaches

Psychologists have found that patterns like rage, addiction, and mental disorders often appear in families even without a genetic link. These inherited tendencies align with what the Bible calls familiar spirits—spiritual entities that follow bloodlines and manifest through soul wounds and unrepented sin.

Breaking the Curse: What You Can Do

To break generational curses, follow the biblical pattern found in Nehemiah 9:1-2:

1. Confess Your Sins and the Sins of Your Fathers
   Just like Israel did, acknowledge your sins and the iniquities of your ancestors back to Adam and Eve.

2. Repent and Renounce
   Say aloud, “I renounce the sin of __ in my family line and break all agreements with it in Jesus’ name.”

3. Cast Out the Spirit
   Use the authority Jesus gave you. Say, “Spirit of alcoholism (or lying, fear, etc.), I command you to leave in the name of Jesus.”

4. Apply the Blood of Jesus
   “I cover this sin and curse with the Blood of Jesus. It is now washed away and powerless in my life.”

5. Take Responsibility
   Read through Deuteronomy 27–28. Make a list of known family issues—mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Take responsibility even if you didn’t start it.

6. Do a Family Tree Chart
   List sins, diseases, or repeated tragedies in four generations. This helps you visually identify patterns and pray specifically.

If the flow is not stopped, it will continue through your children and grandchildren. But if you break it, freedom flows instead.

Final Charge: Restoration Through Repentance

God is calling His Church back to repentance—not just personal repentance, but also intergenerational repentance. We must help others recognize and break these strongholds through spiritual warfare and deliverance ministry.

Encourage your church and loved ones to identify, renounce, and remove generational curses. You may be the one God chooses to stop the flow of destruction in your bloodline and release healing for generations to come.

A Curse Cannot Land Without a Cause – Breaking Demonic Legal Rights

Curses Require Legal Access

After decades of deliverance ministry, one of the biggest misconceptions I continue to see is the belief that demonic spirits can just attack Christians at random. This is not true. Demons require permission—a legal spiritual right, often gained through sin—before they can access a person's life.

❗ What Does This Mean?

According to God's Word, a curse cannot operate unless it has a legal cause. That cause is usually personal sin, willful disobedience to God, or unbroken ancestral iniquities that you've agreed with or walked in.

Even generational curses do not automatically affect you unless you open the same spiritual doors your ancestors did. Familiar spirits observe your bloodline and tempt you with the same sins, trying to trap you into falling—thereby activating the curse in your life.

🧬 Demonic Inheritance in the Womb

Some spirits do enter at conception due to strong ancestral sin. These spiritual characteristics—like self-hatred, rejection, depression, or fear—may be called “traits” by the world. But in the spirit realm, they’re often inherited demons passed through the bloodline.

🛡️ How to Stay Free from Curses

If you want to be free from the enemy’s legal authority:

1. Repent of Personal Sin

Sin gives the devil permission to attack. Without repentance, you remain vulnerable (Romans 6:16).

2. Break Generational Curses

Use spiritual warfare prayers and confess the sins of your forefathers (Leviticus 26:40, Nehemiah 9).

3. Reject Fear and Unbelief

Fear, bitterness, unforgiveness, rebellion—these are major open doors.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7

💣 The Devil Needs Legal Grounds

Satan is a legalistic being—a "legal beagle." He cannot just curse you randomly. He waits for an opportunity—a sin, a lie believed, or an unhealed wound—to gain a foothold (Ephesians 4:27).

“The curse causeless shall not come.” — Proverbs 26:2

If there’s no cause, the curse cannot land.

😢 Cheap Grace and Powerless Churches

Today's church has cheapened the grace of God. We've stopped preaching on sin, repentance, and holiness. Instead, we tolerate sin and claim there's no consequence. This is spiritual deception.

Grace does not mean God overlooks sin—it means He gives us the power to overcome it. True repentance means turning away from sin, not just saying, “I’m sorry.”

🤔 Didn’t Jesus Take the Curse?

Yes—and no. Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13), but we must appropriate that freedom through repentance and obedience.

Revelation 22:3 says:

“And there shall be no more curse...”
This refers to the future—after Jesus returns and the new heaven and earth are established. Until then, curses still exist and can still affect Christians who open doors.

🚪 Curses Opened Through Works of the Flesh

Let’s look at what Paul calls the works of the flesh in Galatians 5:19–21:

“They which do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God.”

These include:

• Adultery

• Witchcraft

• Hatred

• Strife

• Envyings

• Drunkenness
  ...and more.

When these are practiced without repentance, they open the door to curses and demonic activity.

✝️ Victory Through the Blood of Jesus

When a believer genuinely repents, renounces the sin, and walks in truth, the blood of Jesus cleanses and restores.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9

⚔️ Spiritual Warfare Scriptures for Overcoming

Here are powerful Scriptures to stand on:

• Luke 10:19 – Authority over all the power of the enemy

• John 16:33 – Jesus overcame the world

• Ephesians 6:10–17 – Full armor of God

• James 4:7 – Submit to God, resist the devil

• 1 John 4:4 – Greater is He who is in you

• Revelation 12:11 – Overcame by the blood and testimony

📉 What Happens Without True Repentance?

Luke 11:24–26 tells us that when a spirit leaves a person, it comes back to check if the house is clean, empty, and swept. If it finds no indwelling of truth or lasting repentance, it returns with seven more spirits worse than itself.

This is why after deliverance, continued sin results in deeper bondage. If you’re not walking in truth, you’re giving demons a return invitation.

Breaking Spiritual Strongholds: How the Enemy Gains Access to Your Mind

What Are Spiritual Strongholds?

A spiritual stronghold is not just a bad habit or behavior. It’s a deeply rooted mindset—a fortress built in the mind by the enemy through deception, trauma, pain, sin, or false identity. These strongholds block God’s truth from taking root in your soul. And worse, they open the door for demonic control.

But before we go deeper, you must understand this: there is an enemy—Satan—and his goal is to capture your mind and soul through these strongholds.

The mind is the battlefield of the soul. Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” What you think, believe, and agree with becomes the reality you walk in.

Satan’s Tactic: Take Control of Your Mind

Satan doesn’t just aim to oppress your thoughts at a conscious level—he wants access to the deeper subconscious patterns where your motives, identity, and emotional reactions are formed. If he can influence the way you think, he can gain a foothold in your emotions, relationships, finances, and physical health.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 gives us our warfare strategy:

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh... the weapons of our warfare are mighty through God for the pulling down of strongholds...”

Strongholds are mental fortresses the enemy builds using trauma, lies, and repeated negative experiences. The enemy hurls thoughts like fiery darts—accusations, hopelessness, rejection, and fear—to weaken your walls of truth.

What Is a Stronghold?

In ancient times, a stronghold was a fortified city with high walls, food reserves, and a water source. It was built for defense—but spiritually, strongholds in the mind become prisons that keep truth out and lies in.

Imagine these strongholds formed over time:

• "I’m not good enough."

• "God can’t use someone like me."

• "Everyone always leaves me."

• "I’ll never be free from this addiction."

These aren’t passing thoughts—they become false identities rooted in pain. That’s how demons take up legal residence: through agreement.

How Strongholds Form

A stronghold is a lie you believe that contradicts the Word of God, yet you have unknowingly come into agreement with it. These lies often form through:

• Repeated abuse or trauma

• Unforgiveness and offense

• Rejection and abandonment

• Generational curses or sins

• Shame, guilt, or condemnation

• Occult exposure or false religions

Over time, these repeated lies become a spiritual fortress. They dictate how you see yourself, God, and others—creating deep patterns of bondage.

Examples of Strongholds:

• Fear: Believing “I’m not safe” even when nothing is threatening you.

• Rejection: Feeling unworthy of love, sabotaging relationships.

• Unbelief: Doubting God’s promises because of disappointment.

• Lust: Using sexual sin to medicate pain or rejection.

• Anger: Reacting explosively to defend hidden insecurities.

• Control: Needing to dominate situations due to fear of betrayal.

These are not just personality quirks—they are demonic influences behind mental strongholds.

The Function of a Stronghold

Strongholds act as filters. They distort how you hear sermons, read the Bible, or receive godly counsel. A person trapped in a stronghold hears, “God loves you,” but their internal stronghold says, “You’re unlovable.” The Word cannot penetrate the walls of lies without divine intervention.

They block healing, truth, and repentance. They are the enemy’s smoke screens to keep you in bondage.

The Weapons That Break Strongholds

You cannot argue your way out of a stronghold. Counseling alone won’t break it. You need spiritual weapons:

1. The Word of God – Speak truth to confront the lie (Hebrews 4:12).

2. Prayer and Fasting – Breaks spiritual resistance (Matthew 17:21).

3. Deliverance Ministry – Casts out demons that inhabit strongholds (Mark 16:17).

4. Confession and Repentance – Renounce lies and close legal doors (James 5:16).

5. Anointed Worship – Shifts atmospheres and breaks chains (2 Chron. 20:22).

6. Holy Spirit Discernment – Reveals the root issue (1 Cor. 2:10).

God’s Desire: Your Total Freedom

God doesn't want your past pain, trauma, or beliefs to hold you back. He wants to uproot strongholds, heal your inner wounds, and restore your identity in Christ.

You are not what happened to you. You are not what others said about you. You are not what the devil accuses you of. You are a beloved child of God, purchased by the blood of Jesus, with access to complete deliverance and freedom.

Prescription Drugs - Third Cause of Death in America - this needs to move

Pharmakia is Prescription Drugs - The Third Cause of Death

The Greek word "pharmakia" literally means "drugs", and appears five times in the New Testament: in Gal 5:20, Rev 9:21, 18:23, 21:8, and 22:15. "Pharmakia" is translated into our English Bible as either "witchcraft" or "sorceries". We also get our English word "pharmacy" from the Greek "pharmakia".


In each of the above five passages, "pharmakia", or "drugs" is listed as a work of the flesh of man as opposed to the Spirit of God working in us.


For example, Gal 5:16-23 in the KJV:


16 "[This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft ("pharmakia" or drug use), hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance (self-control): against such there is no law."

The King James Bible translators translated "pharmakia" as "witchcraft" because almost no one but witches and sorcerers used drugs 400 years ago. Drugs were most commonly used in pagan worship to hallucinate and to try to get in touch with evil spirits.

Our medical world is a mess! Every year in the US, there are:

12,000 deaths from unnecessary surgeries;

7,000 deaths from medication errors in hospitals;

20,000 deaths from other errors in hospitals;

80,000 deaths from infections acquired in hospitals;

106,000 deaths from FDA-approved, correctly prescribed medicines.

The total of medically-caused deaths in the US every year is 225,000.

This makes the medical system the third leading cause of death in the US, behind heart disease and cancer.

Since the FDA approves every medical drug given to the American people and certifies it as safe and effective, how can that agency remain calm about the fact that these medicines are causing 106,000 deaths per year?

Do the 106,000 deaths from medical drugs only involve drugs prescribed to patients in hospitals, or does this statistic also cover people prescribed drugs who are not in-patients in hospitals?

The pharmaceutical giants stand back and carve the populace into “promising markets.” They seek new disease labels and new profits from more and more toxic drugs. They do whatever they can—legally or illegally—to influence doctors' prescribing habits. Some drug studies that cast new medicines in a negative light are buried. FDA panels are filled with doctors who have drug-company ties. Legislators are incessantly lobbied and supported with pharma campaign monies.


This can be serious stuff! In Rev. 21:8, God says that people who are continually characterized by drug use will have no part in the Kingdom of God.

I recommend learning to walk in the Spirit and studying the New Testament Epistles to the Churches (Romans to Jude).

As we grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we will want to do things that please God.

Look again at Gal 5:22 & 23, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (self-control)"

Isn't that what the whole world is looking for? It's automatic when we walk in the Spirit!

The Christian life is a "supernatural" life; we cannot please God in our energy. We can only please God by allowing Him to work THROUGH us.

In a recent church gathering, a well-known evangelical pastor led his congregation in a breathing exercise, instructing them to take “nice, big, deep breaths.” He claimed this practice—along with meditation, reflection, and silence—had always been part of Christian tradition.

He went on to reference Yoga, affirming, “One of its central tenets is that your breath must remain constant regardless of the pose. Yoga masters say this is how you follow Jesus and surrender to God.”

⚠️ The Rise of Christian Mysticism

Pastors like Rob Bell represent a new wave of evangelical leaders embracing mysticism, often citing medieval Catholic mystics or drawing directly from Eastern spiritual practices in their search for “spiritual depth.”

While some medieval mystics were sincere in their desire for God, their doctrines were often flawed and unanchored from Scripture. Their loyalty remained with the institutional church and the pope, rather than the Bible. This left them vulnerable to subjective experiences and false revelations, many of which were psychic or even demonic in origin.

Mysticism frequently leads to altered states of consciousness, which Scripture never instructs believers to seek. This opens the door to deception, counterfeit experiences, and spiritual confusion.

🛑 What’s the Problem with Mystical Experiences?

As Catholic theologian Dr. Hans Küng observed:

“These new revelations not only overshadowed the Bible and the Gospel but also Him whom the Gospel proclaims... It is striking how rarely Christ appeared in all these ‘revelations,’ ‘apparitions,’ and ‘wonders.’”

Küng goes on to say that many of the most devout Catholics of his time chased after mystical visions and experiences, yet had never read the Scriptures cover to cover.

This quote highlights the core issue: Mysticism replaces the authority of Scripture with personal, subjective experiences. It may feel spiritual—but it often leads people away from Christ, not toward Him.

🔍 Historical Roots: Where Did Mysticism Come From?

Medieval mysticism emerged as a reaction against the cold, lifeless rituals of the medieval Catholic Church. During this same era, genuine revival movements such as the Waldenses and Albigenses also arose—but unlike the mystics, these groups gave their full allegiance to Scripture, not to religious institutions.

The mystics, however, fell prey to non-biblical spiritual philosophies, especially Neoplatonism—a pagan, mystical worldview that prioritizes inner enlightenment, oneness with the universe, and altered consciousness.

Today’s “Christian” mysticism is little more than a modern rebranding of these ancient pagan beliefs, wrapped in church lingo and disguised as “spiritual formation” or “contemplative prayer.”

🚫 Breathing Exercises, Yoga, and the Church

When Christian leaders begin to teach breath control as a way to connect with God or quote yoga masters as spiritual guides, we have crossed a dangerous line. Breathing and stillness are not the problem—but when they are used as a portal to spiritual states outside of biblical prayer, they become an entry point for deception.

Breathing exercises are not “neutral.” In Eastern mysticism, they are designed to induce altered states, invite spirit guides, and empty the mind—all of which are forbidden by God’s Word (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

📖 What Does the Bible Say?

The Bible calls believers to meditate—not on silence or breath—but on God’s Word.

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.” — Psalm 1:2

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8

God never instructs His people to enter altered states, repeat mantras, or seek union with the divine self. True prayer is relational, not experiential for the sake of experience.

In every generation, the Church is tempted to add to the simplicity of the Gospel. Mysticism offers spiritual thrills but produces spiritual bondage. Experiences without biblical truth become idolatry—even when labeled “Christian.”

Believers today must exercise discernment, test every spirit (1 John 4:1), and cling to God’s Word as the final authority—not feelings, dreams, or mystical visions.

What is a Bastard's Curse?

A “bastard” in biblical terms refers to a child born out of wedlock, conceived outside the covenant of marriage. The term may sound harsh by modern standards, but in the biblical context, it represents more than just a social label; it carries a generational spiritual consequence that can affect individuals' emotional and spiritual lives for generations.

Scriptural Foundation

Deuteronomy 23:2 (KJV) says:

“A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the Lord.”

This sobering verse highlights a serious spiritual reality. Children born outside the sanctity of marriage are cut off from spiritual community and blessings unless the curse is broken. That separation can manifest emotionally, relationally, and spiritually without people knowing the root cause.

Spiritual Consequences of the Bastard Curse

In healing and deliverance ministry, we have found a recurring pattern: people born out of wedlock often carry deep-seated wounds and spiritual oppression. Common manifestations include:

• Rejection

• Abandonment

• Fear and anxiety

• Lust and perversion

• Shame and guilt

• Identity confusion

• Feeling like they never fit in or belong

These are not just psychological patterns—they are spiritual strongholds. The curse opens the door for demonic spirits to enter at conception or during gestation. These spirits—of rejection, fear, shame, and more—often gain legal ground through this generational inequity.

Common Symptoms of the Bastard Curse

1. Feelings of Rejection and Abandonment

   • A persistent sense of being unloved, unwanted, or “on the outside looking in.”

   • Difficulty receiving love, even from God or trusted people.

2. Struggle with Identity and Belonging

   • Never feeling “good enough” to fit in—at church, in families, or in relationships.

   • A strong sense of being disconnected from purpose and destiny.

3. Inability to Bond with Father Figures or Authority

   • Deep mistrust or rebellion toward parental or spiritual authority.

   • Difficulty connecting to God as a loving Father.

4. Generational Patterns of Illegitimacy

   • Repeated patterns of out-of-wedlock births, divorce, and broken family structures.

   • A family history marked by instability, sexual sin, or abandonment.

5. Religious Resistance and Spiritual Barrenness

   • Feeling spiritually dry, despite effort.

   • Lack of breakthrough in prayer, worship, or intimacy with God.

   • Feeling “orphaned” in the body of Christ.

6. Self-Sabotage and Shame Cycles

   • Repeating destructive patterns, often driven by a subconscious belief that one is “cursed.”

   • Shame and guilt that linger even after repentance.

Children Know

Even young children somehow intuitively know if they were conceived in a covenant or out of lust. Children often ask questions like, “Were you married when I was born?” or look at wedding dates and compare them with their birthdates. When they discover there was no marriage or realize they were unwanted, it brings shame and self-rejection.

These wounds invite the enemy to whisper lies like:

• “You were never wanted.”

• “You don’t belong.”

• “You’ll never be enough.”

Such lies shape identities and behaviors. The person may crave love but seek it in unhealthy, ungodly ways, often repeating the cycle by conceiving children outside of marriage themselves.

The Generational Nature of the Curse

Deuteronomy 23:2 says the curse can last up to ten generations. That’s a long time. Many people are walking in spiritual bondage today because of an ancestor’s sin. The enemy uses these doorways to keep families in cycles of brokenness, shame, and rebellion against God.

Breaking the Curse Through Christ

If this resonates with your life, there is hope in Jesus Christ. The curse is real, but the power of the cross is greater.

Galatians 3:13 says:

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us...”

When Jesus died on the cross, He made it possible for every curse—including the bastard curse—to be broken. Here’s how you can begin to walk in freedom:

1. Forgive Your Parents – Even if you don’t know the full story, choose to forgive your mother and father for conceiving you outside of marriage. Release them from the debt you feel they owe you.

2. Renounce the Curse – Speak aloud in the name of Jesus that you break and renounce the bastard curse and all spirits associated with it.

3. Cast Out Associated Spirits – In Christ’s authority, command the spirits of rejection, abandonment, fear, shame, lust, and others to leave you.

4. Receive Your Identity as a Child of God – If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, you are a beloved son or daughter of God. You are not illegitimate in His eyes.

Romans 8:15 says:

“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

5. Ask for the Father’s Blessing – Whether your earthly father is living or not, ask your Heavenly Father to bless you and fill that parental void. If possible, ask your earthly father or mother for a spoken blessing. Words carry power.

6. Teach Your Children – If you have children born out of wedlock, ask their forgiveness for opening that door. Break the curse off them in the name of Jesus. Speak blessings over them. Begin teaching them the ways of the Lord to protect them from repeating the cycle.

The Power of Confession and Repentance

There is always hope when there is repentance. If you are the parent, confess your sins before God, repent, and break the curse on your child. If you are the child, forgive and release your parents and step into your full inheritance in Christ.

The Power of Deliverance Ministry of Breaking the Bastard Curse

Deliverance ministry is a biblical, Christ-centered process that helps people identify and break ungodly spiritual attachments, curses, and demonic influences. The bastard curse, while spiritually rooted, can be broken through repentance, renunciation, and spiritual authority in Jesus' name.

1. Breaking Legal Ground

Deliverance exposes and closes the spiritual doors opened through generational sins or past trauma. Through repentance for the sins of the forefathers (Nehemiah 1:6) and breaking agreement with illegitimacy, legal ground is removed from the enemy.

2. Healing Rejection and Identity

Jesus came to restore the brokenhearted (Luke 4:18). In deliverance, the Holy Spirit begins to rebuild your identity as a legitimate child of God—fully accepted, loved, and chosen.

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God...” (John 1:12)

3. Restoration of Intimacy with the Father

Once the curse is broken, many people report a new ability to connect with God, feel His presence, and receive His love as “Abba Father.” The Spirit of adoption replaces the orphan spirit (Romans 8:15).

4. Freedom for Future Generations

Deliverance doesn’t just bring freedom to the individual—it stops the cycle of illegitimacy in the family line. Your obedience and healing today become a blessing for your children and grandchildren.

What Are Inner Vows?

Inner vows are hidden agreements we make with ourselves—often in moments of pain, fear, or trauma. These self-directed promises sound like:

• “I’ll never let a man hurt me again.”

• “I’ll never trust anyone.”

• “I have to take care of everything because no one else will.”

At their core, inner vows are statements we make to protect ourselves, but they actually limit God’s access to those areas of our hearts. These silent declarations bind us to fear, distrust, bitterness, and self-reliance rather than to the Lord's healing and protection.

Why Are Inner Vows Dangerous?

When you make an inner vow, you are placing your will above God's will. This creates a spiritual legal ground for the enemy. Satan enforces those vows, ensuring the pain you tried to avoid circles back again and again. Why? Because you placed your trust in your own words rather than in God’s promises. Proverbs 23:7 says, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Your inner belief systems shape your reality.

🧠 Common Inner Vows That Sabotage Your Life

Some examples of inner vows include:

• “No one will ever hurt me again.”

• “I’ll never be like my father/mother.”

• “I can’t show emotion.”

• “Men don’t cry.”

• “People always take advantage of me.”

• “I'm not good enough.”

• “I can’t change.”

• “I’m worthless.”

• “It’s my job to fix everything.”

These vows form a stronghold in your mind, keeping you in cycles of rejection, performance, control, fear, isolation, or self-hatred.

And here’s the truth: many of these vows were made when you were a child. You may not even remember making them—but the effects are still active in your adult relationships, decisions, and identity.

🧱 Inner Vows Are a Form of Bitterness and Judgment

Inner vows often stem from bitterness, judgment, and unforgiveness toward someone who hurt us. In many cases, they are the outcome of trauma, abuse, abandonment, or rejection. For example:

• If your mother was controlling, you may say, “I’ll never be like her.”

• If your father was absent, you may say, “I’ll never depend on anyone.”

These vows come from a place of deep emotional wounding, and they chain us to pain until they are broken through deliverance.

🙏 Breaking Inner Vows: A Step-by-Step Process to Freedom

1. Ask the Holy Spirit to Reveal Your Inner Vows

Get quiet before the Lord. Ask, “Holy Spirit, have I made any inner vows?” Write down what comes to mind.

2. Identify the People and the Pain

Who hurt you? What experience triggered the vow? Often it's a parent, teacher, relative, or someone you trusted.

3. Forgive Those Involved

You must forgive the one who caused the hurt—whether they deserve it or not. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks freedom.

4. Repent for Making the Inner Vow

Repent for putting your trust in your own words rather than in God. Acknowledge that this vow was a form of self-idolatry and distrust in God.

5. Renounce and Break the Inner Vow with Prayer

Declare with authority that you revoke and renounce that inner vow. Speak out loud:

• “I can trust the Lord with all my heart” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Speak life over yourself daily. The enemy has no more legal right to torment you in those areas!
