Transference: A Biblical Warning About Demonic Spirit Transfer, Open Doors, and Spiritual Contamination

What Is Transference?

Transference is the process where an indwelling unclean spirit leaves one person, body, object, place, or source and enters another. In deliverance ministry, transference can refer to the movement or attempted movement of a demonic spirit from one person to another through spiritual open doors, agreement, sin, occult involvement, laying on of hands, sexual sin, curses, soul ties, trauma bonds, rituals, or contaminated objects.

This is not the same as emotional transference in counseling. This article is specifically about spiritual transference, meaning the movement or transfer of unclean spirits.

From a biblical perspective, demons are real. They seek bodies, access, influence, and legal rights. Jesus cast out demons, and Scripture shows that unclean spirits can leave one place and seek another place to dwell.

Is Transference in the Bible?

The Bible gives examples that show spirits can leave and enter.

Mark 5:11–13

When Jesus delivered the man with the legion of demons, the demons begged to enter the pigs. Jesus allowed them to go, and they entered the herd.

This shows that demons can leave one body and enter another living being when permitted.

Matthew 12:43–45

Jesus said that when an unclean spirit goes out of a person, it walks through dry places seeking rest. If it finds the person’s “house” empty, swept, and garnished, it returns with seven other spirits more wicked than itself.

This shows that demons seek places to return to and can re-enter when doors remain open.

1 Timothy 5:22

“Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.”

This warns believers to be careful with spiritual contact, agreement, and impartation.

1 John 4:1

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”

Not every spirit is from God. Christians must test the spirits.

How Can Transference Happen?

Spiritual transference can happen through open doors and agreements. It is not something a Christian should fear obsessively, but it is something believers should understand with discernment.

Possible doors include:

• occult involvement
• witchcraft
• divination
• séances
• mediumship
• spirit guides
• New Age healing
• laying on of hands from wrong sources
• sexual sin
• ungodly soul ties
• trauma bonds
• blood covenants
• curses
• vows and oaths
• rituals
• cursed objects
• generational spirits
• close agreement with sin
• participation in false worship
• spiritual contamination through occult places
• deliberate demonic assignments

Demons do not transfer simply because someone walks by you. The enemy looks for legal rights, open doors, agreement, fear, sin, trauma, or spiritual vulnerability.

Can Spirits Transfer Through Laying on of Hands?

Yes, spiritual transfer can happen through laying on of hands when the person ministering is operating under the wrong spirit, false anointing, occult power, or unclean spiritual influence.

Biblical laying on of hands should be done under the authority of Jesus Christ, led by the Holy Spirit, with holiness and discernment.

Not every hand is holy.

Not every spiritual impartation is from God.

This is why believers must be careful who prays over them, who lays hands on them, who “imparts” to them, and what spirit is operating.

Can Spirits Transfer Through Sexual Sin?

Yes. Sexual sin can create ungodly soul ties and spiritual transfer.

1 Corinthians 6:16 says that the one joined to a harlot becomes one body. Sexual union is not merely physical. It can create deep spiritual, emotional, and soul connections.

Through sexual sin, a person may receive:

• lust spirits
• perversion
• rejection
• shame
• bondage
• addiction
• spirit spouse activity
• trauma spirits
• fear
• control
• anger
• generational spirits
• familiar spirits

This is why repentance, renunciation, and breaking ungodly soul ties are important.

Can Spirits Transfer Through Occult Practices?

Yes. Occult practices can open major doors for transference.

Can Spirits Transfer Through Objects?

Objects can be spiritually contaminated if they have been used in witchcraft, idolatry, curses, rituals, false worship, or occult practices.

• amulets
• charms

• crystals used for spiritual power

• objects dedicated to spirits

The object itself is not more powerful than Jesus Christ, but it may represent an open door, agreement, dedication, or legal right. Occult objects should be removed and destroyed.

Can Spirits Transfer Through Ministry?

Yes, if ministry is done without discernment, pridefully, carelessly, or through false anointing. Deliverance ministers should stay submitted to Jesus Christ, remain clean before God, forgive quickly, renounce pride, and avoid ministering in the flesh.

A minister should not take demons into themselves.

A minister should command spirits to go where Jesus sends them.

A minister should not receive burdens, sickness, curses, spirits, or pain from the person being ministered to.

Jesus is the Deliverer.

Why Is Transference Spiritually Dangerous?

Transference is dangerous because it can bring demonic oppression, torment, sickness, bondage, confusion, fear, lust, heaviness, and spiritual contamination.

Possible effects include:

• sudden oppression
• strange thoughts
• nightmares
• fear
• heaviness
• fatigue
• personality changes
• sudden lust or anger
• confusion
• anxiety
• spiritual torment
• strange dreams
• attraction to sin
• demonic manifestations
• sickness or body pain
• compulsions
• loss of peace
• feeling drained after ministry
• feeling “not yourself”
• spiritual heaviness in the home

Not every symptom means transference occurred, but if symptoms began after occult contact, sexual sin, wrong laying on of hands, cursed objects, or deliverance ministry, the door should be addressed.

Why Would Someone Get Involved in Transference?

Some transference is not intentional. It can happen because of ignorance, sin, fear, or open doors. But some people knowingly attempt to transfer spirits through witchcraft, curses, occult rituals, or demonic assignments.

Reasons people may become involved include:

1. Occult Practices

Witchcraft and sorcery often attempt to send spirits or curses against others.

2. False Healing

Energy healers may unknowingly transfer spirits through counterfeit healing methods.

3. Sexual Sin

Ungodly sexual connections can transfer spirits through soul ties.

4. Ministry Without Discernment

People may lay hands too quickly or receive impartations from unclean sources.

Family spirits may operate through bloodline agreements and transfer through generations.

7. Fear and Agreement

Signs You May Need Deliverance After Transference

You may need deliverance if you experience:

• heaviness after prayer or ministry

• sudden lust, anger, fear, or depression
• feeling spiritually contaminated

• unexplained fatigue
• new compulsions
• body pain after ministry

What Should a Christian Do?

1. Do Not Panic

Fear gives the enemy room. Jesus Christ is Lord.

2. Repent of Open Doors

Repent for sin, occult involvement, sexual sin, pride, unforgiveness, fear, or receiving from wrong sources.

3. Renounce the Transfer

Verbally reject and renounce any spirit that transferred or attempted to transfer.

4. Break Soul Ties

Break ungodly soul ties formed through sex, ministry dependence, trauma bonds, control, or occult connections.

5. Cancel Assignments

Cancel every curse, ritual, assignment, word, and spirit sent against you.

6. Remove Cursed Objects

Destroy occult or spiritually contaminated items.

7. Be Filled With the Holy Spirit

Ask Jesus to cleanse and fill every place where the enemy had access.

8. Seek Deliverance

If oppression, manifestations, sickness, dreams, or heaviness continues, seek biblical deliverance.

Deliverance Prayer for Renouncing Transference

Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ, I come before You in repentance.

I repent for every open door that allowed spiritual transference, including sin, occult involvement, witchcraft, divination, sexual sin, ungodly soul ties, fear, trauma bonds, wrong laying on of hands, false impartation, cursed objects, false worship, and any agreement with darkness.

I renounce every demonic spirit that transferred to me or attempted to transfer to me.

I renounce witchcraft, divination, familiar spirits, lust, perversion, fear, rejection, infirmity, torment, confusion, false healing, false impartation, spirit spouse, generational spirits, and every unclean spirit that entered through transference.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break every ungodly soul tie, spirit tie, emotional tie, sexual tie, ministry tie, trauma tie, and occult tie that gave the enemy access.

I cancel every curse, ritual, assignment, projection, transfer, impartation, dedication, vow, agreement, and legal right connected to transference.

I command every spirit that transferred into me, attached to me, followed me, entered my home, or came through another person, object, ritual, sexual sin, occult practice, or false impartation to leave me now in the name of Jesus Christ.

I close every open door. I break every legal right. I reject every spirit that is not the Holy Spirit.

Lord Jesus, wash me in Your blood. Cleanse my body, soul, spirit, mind, emotions, memories, dreams, home, family line, and everything connected to me.

Fill me with the Holy Spirit. Restore my peace, strength, discernment, authority, and spiritual purity.

I declare that I belong to Jesus Christ. I am covered by the blood of Jesus. I am sealed by the Holy Spirit. No unclean spirit has permission to remain.

In Jesus Christ’s name, amen.
