Temples to Worship False Gods: A Biblical Warning About Idolatry, False Worship, and Spiritual Bondage
What Are Temples to False Gods?
A temple is a building devoted to worship or regarded as the dwelling place of a god, gods, spirits, idols, ancestors, or other objects of religious reverence. In many religions, temples are used for offerings, prayers, rituals, sacrifices, incense, chanting, meditation, spirit communication, and worship of false gods.
Temples to false gods may include places dedicated to:
- Hindu gods and goddesses
- Buddhist images and idols
- Taoist deities and ancestors
- Pagan gods and goddesses
- Greek and Roman deities
- Egyptian gods
- New Age spiritual beings
- Witchcraft or occult deities
- Ancestor spirits
- Saints or angelic beings wrongly worshiped
- Gurus or religious leaders treated as divine
From a biblical perspective, any place dedicated to the worship of another god is spiritually dangerous. God alone is worthy of worship.
Where Did Temples to False Gods Come From?
Temples to false gods have existed since ancient times. Many civilizations built temples for idols, pagan gods, fertility goddesses, sun gods, moon gods, war gods, water gods, underworld gods, and ancestral spirits.
The Bible repeatedly shows that nations built high places, altars, groves, shrines, and temples to false gods. Israel was warned many times not to follow these practices.
There is no single founder of temple worship to false gods. It comes from mankind’s rebellion against the true God and the desire to worship created things instead of the Creator.
Why Are Temples to False Gods Against God’s Word?
God’s Word is clear: His people must not worship other gods.
Exodus 20:3
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:4–5
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image… Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…”
Deuteronomy 12:2–3
God commanded Israel to destroy the places where the nations worshiped false gods, including altars, pillars, groves, and graven images.
1 Corinthians 10:20–21
Paul warned that sacrifices offered to idols are actually connected to demons, and believers cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils.
2 Corinthians 6:16
“What agreement hath the temple of God with idols?”
The Bible does not treat idol worship as harmless culture. It identifies idolatry as spiritual adultery, rebellion, and demonic agreement.
What Happens in Temples to False Gods?
Depending on the religion or practice, temples may involve:
- Bowing before idols
- Lighting incense
- Chanting mantras
- Offering food or flowers
- Burning candles
- Praying to false gods
- Praying to ancestors
- Spirit communication
- Ritual sacrifices
- Meditation before idols
- Vows and dedications
- Religious initiations
- Healing rituals
- Divination
- Occult ceremonies
- Calling on spirits for help, power, protection, money, fertility, healing, or guidance
Even if someone is only visiting, taking pictures, or “respecting the culture,” a Christian must use discernment. Bowing, praying, making offerings, lighting incense, or participating in rituals can create spiritual agreement.
Why Would Someone Go to a Temple of a False God?
People may go for many reasons:
- Family tradition — They were raised in that religion or culture.
- Curiosity — They want to explore another religion.
- Tourism — They visit temples while traveling.
- Fear — They believe a god, spirit, or ancestor may curse them if they do not participate.
- Need for help — They are seeking healing, money, marriage, fertility, protection, or answers.
- Spiritual hunger — They want supernatural experiences but do not know Jesus Christ.
- Peer pressure — Family or friends expect them to take part.
- Deception — They believe all religions lead to the same God.
But Jesus Christ is not one way among many. He is the only Way.
How Can This Hurt a Christian?
A Christian can be spiritually affected by participating in false worship, even casually.
Possible open doors include:
- Idolatry
- False religion
- Familiar spirits
- Ancestral spirits
- Witchcraft
- Divination
- Religious spirits
- Spirit guides
- Fear
- Confusion
- Torment
- Spiritual heaviness
- Loss of peace
- Dreams of idols, temples, serpents, dragons, dead relatives, or false gods
- Difficulty praying or reading the Bible
- Attraction to other religions
- Generational bondage
A Christian belongs to Jesus Christ. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We must not come into agreement with idols. Even being in a temple that worships false gods where demonic spirits can transfer onto a person.
Can Objects From Temples Be Dangerous?
Yes. Objects bought or received from temples may be spiritually dedicated, blessed, prayed over, or connected to false worship.
This may include:
- Statues
- Prayer beads
- Talismans
- Charms
- Incense
- Ritual cloths
- Deity pictures
- Amulets
- Temple jewelry
- Prayer flags
- Offerings
- Idols
- Ritual bowls
- Books of chants or mantras
If an object is dedicated to a false god or used in idol worship, it should be removed and destroyed.
What Curses Can Come Through False Temple Worship?
False worship can open the door to:
1. Curse of Idolatry
Worshiping false gods breaks the first commandment.
2. Curse of False Religion
The person may become bound to another spiritual system.
3. Curse of Familiar Spirits
Prayers to ancestors, spirits, saints, gods, or goddesses can invite familiar spirits.
4. Curse of Fear
Many false religions use fear of curses, ancestors, spirits, or punishment to keep people bound.
5. Curse of Witchcraft
Some temples include rituals, charms, talismans, divination, and spirit power.
6. Generational Curses
Family temple worship, ancestral altars, vows, dedications, or offerings may affect the bloodline until renounced through Jesus Christ.
What Should a Christian Do If They Participated?
- Repent for participating in false worship.
- Renounce every false god, idol, temple ritual, offering, vow, and dedication.
- Destroy objects connected to false worship.
- Break agreements with spirits, ancestors, deities, and religious systems.
- Cancel every curse, vow, dedication, or ritual spoken over you.
- Ask Jesus to cleanse you by His blood.
- Seek deliverance if torment, dreams, fear, oppression, or bondage continues.

Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ, I repent for any involvement with temples, altars, shrines, idols, false gods, ancestor worship, offerings, incense, rituals, vows, dedications, or prayers made to anyone or anything other than You.
I repent for bowing, praying, lighting incense, making offerings, honoring idols, participating in rituals, or coming into agreement with false worship knowingly or unknowingly.
I renounce every false god, goddess, idol, spirit, ancestor spirit, familiar spirit, temple spirit, religious spirit, and demonic power connected to false worship.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I break every vow, dedication, offering, ritual, covenant, agreement, and generational tie connected to temples of false gods.
I cancel every curse, assignment, and legal right the enemy gained through idolatry, false worship, temple rituals, or objects dedicated to false gods.
I command every demon that entered through false worship, idolatry, ancestor worship, rituals, talismans, offerings, or temple objects to leave me now in the name of Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus, wash me in Your blood. Cleanse my body, soul, spirit, mind, home, family line, and everything connected to me.
I declare that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I worship the one true God only.
In Jesus Christ’s name, amen.
