Food Offerings to the Dead: What the Bible Says

Food Offerings to the Dead: What the Bible Says

A Christian spiritual warfare image showing a family altar, ancestral offerings, and darkness being overcome by the light of Jesus Christ.

Worship of the Dead and Ancestral Worship: A Biblical Warning About Honoring the Dead, Family Altars, and Spiritual Deception

Introduction

Ancestral worship is the belief that departed family members do not truly die, but continue living in an invisible realm, often described as a kingdom of the dead, spirit world, ancestral realm, or unseen family line. In this belief system, deceased ancestors are thought to influence the living by bringing blessing, protection, sickness, curses, guidance, prosperity, punishment, fertility, or family trouble.

Because of this belief, many families offer food, drink, incense, prayers, paper money, alcohol, flowers, candles, and rituals at family tombs, household altars, gravesites, or ancestral tablets. In some cultures, families may offer food, awamori, paper money such as uchikabi or kabijin, incense, and prayers to honor departed ancestors and seek their help or blessing.

From a biblical Christian perspective, honoring family history is not wrong. Remembering loved ones is not wrong. Respecting parents and grandparents is not wrong. But worshiping, praying to, feeding, appeasing, consulting, or making offerings to the dead is spiritually dangerous and forbidden by God.

The Bible does not teach us to seek help from the dead. The Bible teaches us to seek the living God.

What Is Ancestral Worship?

Ancestral worship is the religious or spiritual practice of honoring, serving, praying to, appeasing, or seeking help from deceased ancestors. It is often based on the belief that the dead remain spiritually active and can affect the lives of their living descendants.

People may believe ancestors can:

Protect the family
Bring good fortune
Bring sickness or misfortune if neglected
Guide family decisions
Bless marriages, children, finances, or businesses
Punish disrespectful descendants
Communicate through dreams, signs, mediums, or divination
Remove curses or create curses
Watch over the home
Receive food, drink, incense, or money offerings

In many cultures, ancestral worship is deeply tied to family loyalty, tradition, identity, fear, and obligation. People may feel guilty if they stop participating because they fear dishonoring their family or angering the ancestors.

But the Bible teaches that worship belongs to God alone.

Is Remembering Dead Loved Ones the Same as Ancestral Worship?

No. There is a difference between remembering a loved one and worshiping the dead.

It is not wrong to remember your parents, grandparents, family history, or loved ones who have passed away. It is not wrong to visit a grave, place flowers, grieve, tell family stories, or thank God for a person’s life.

The danger begins when a person:

Prays to the dead
Asks the dead for help
Makes offerings to the dead
Fears the dead
Seeks guidance from the dead
Invites the dead to communicate
Keeps an altar to the dead
Believes the dead can bless or curse them
Consults mediums to speak to the dead
Participates in rituals to feed or appease ancestors

That is no longer remembrance. That becomes spiritual interaction with the dead, and Scripture warns against it.

Why Is Ancestral Worship Against God’s Word?

Ancestral worship is against God’s Word because it gives honor, prayer, fear, offerings, and spiritual dependence to someone other than God. It can also open doors to familiar spirits, divination, necromancy, idolatry, and generational bondage.

Deuteronomy 18:10–12 warns God’s people not to practice divination, witchcraft, sorcery, mediumship, spiritism, or consulting the dead. God calls these practices an abomination.

Leviticus 19:31 says not to turn to mediums or familiar spirits.

Isaiah 8:19 says, “Should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”

That question is powerful. Why should the living seek the dead when we have access to the living God?

Jesus Christ is our mediator, not our ancestors. First Timothy 2:5 says, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

What Does the Bible Say About the Dead?

The Bible teaches that after death, a person does not become a spirit guide, family guardian, or spiritual helper to the living. The dead are not to be consulted, worshiped, appeased, or prayed to.

Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

Luke 16:19–31 shows that the dead do not freely come back to guide the living. Jesus’ teaching about the rich man and Lazarus shows a separation after death and points people back to Scripture.

When King Saul sought the dead through the witch of Endor, it was an act of rebellion and disobedience. First Samuel 28 shows Saul consulting a medium because he was desperate, fearful, and no longer hearing from God. This was not faith. It was forbidden.

God does not want His people looking to the dead for direction. He wants His people looking to Him.

What Spirits Answer in Ancestral Worship?

Many people believe they are speaking to their deceased family members. But biblically, when someone tries to contact the dead, they may be opening themselves to familiar spirits. Familiar spirits can imitate voices, memories, personalities, dreams, emotions, and family information.

A familiar spirit is a demonic spirit that appears familiar. It may seem comforting, loving, ancestral, protective, or wise. But its purpose is deception and bondage.

This is why ancestral worship is so dangerous. A person may think, “I am honoring my grandmother,” or “I am asking my ancestors for protection,” when in reality they may be interacting with spirits that are not from God.

Second Corinthians 11:14 says Satan can transform himself into an angel of light. Not every spiritual experience that feels comforting is from God.

Common Practices in Ancestral Worship

Ancestral worship may vary by culture, but common practices include:

Family altars
Ancestor tablets
Graveside offerings
Food offerings
Alcohol offerings
Incense burning
Candles
Paper money offerings
Prayers to ancestors
Bowing before ancestral tablets
Inviting ancestors to ceremonies
Calling on ancestors for protection
Consulting mediums or spiritists
Dream communication with the dead
Household shrines
Ancestor festivals
Ritual meals for the dead
Keeping ashes or relics as sacred objects
Asking the dead for blessing, luck, or healing
Fear of ancestral anger or punishment

Some cultures may place food, awamori, incense, and paper money at tombs or family altars. The heart behind the practice may be family honor, fear, tradition, or love. But if the offering is made to the dead as spiritual beings who can influence the living, it becomes a forbidden spiritual practice.

Why Do People Get Involved in Ancestral Worship?

People may participate in ancestral worship for many reasons:

Family tradition
Cultural pressure
Fear of dishonoring ancestors
Fear of curses or punishment
Desire for protection
Need for guidance
Grief and longing
Respect for elders
Fear of being rejected by family
Desire for blessing or prosperity
Belief that ancestors control family destiny
Pressure during funerals or memorial ceremonies
Belief that the dead must be fed or cared for
Fear that stopping the rituals will bring sickness or trouble

Many people are not trying to rebel against God. They may simply be following what their family has done for generations. But sincerity does not make a forbidden spiritual practice safe.

How Does Ancestral Worship Hurt a Christian?

Ancestral worship can hurt a Christian by dividing spiritual loyalty. A believer cannot serve Jesus Christ and also seek power, blessing, protection, or guidance from the dead.

Possible spiritual consequences include:

Open doors to familiar spirits
Generational bondage
Fear of ancestors
Tormenting dreams
Confusion
Idolatry
Family curses
Difficulty praying freely
Spiritual heaviness
Double-mindedness
Guilt and fear when refusing rituals
Oppression connected to family altars
Bondage to tradition over obedience to Christ
Repeated family patterns of sickness, poverty, addiction, fear, or premature death
Resistance to deliverance
Spiritual agreements made through offerings, vows, rituals, and prayers

Ancestral worship can create spiritual agreements with the dead, family spirits, and generational spirits. These agreements must be renounced in the name of Jesus Christ.

What About Honoring Father and Mother?

Some people say, “The Bible says to honor father and mother, so ancestral worship is honoring them.”

But biblical honor is not worship. Honoring parents means respecting, caring for, valuing, and remembering them properly. It does not mean praying to them after death, offering food to them, asking them for protection, or fearing their spirits.

Exodus 20:12 says to honor your father and mother.

But Exodus 20:3 says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

We can honor family without worshiping family. We can remember loved ones without consulting the dead. We can thank God for our ancestors without making offerings to them.

Can a Christian Participate in Ancestral Rituals Just to Keep Peace?

This can be very difficult, especially in families where ancestral worship is expected. Some believers may face rejection, anger, shame, or pressure if they refuse to bow, burn incense, offer food, or pray to ancestors.

A Christian should walk in love and humility, but not compromise worship. You can attend a family gathering, show respect, care for relatives, and honor family history without participating in spiritual rituals that violate Scripture.

A believer may say:

“I love our family, and I honor our loved ones, but as a follower of Jesus Christ, I cannot pray to the dead or make offerings to ancestors. I will remember them with love, but I worship God alone.”

This must be done with wisdom, gentleness, and courage.

Is Ancestral Worship Connected to Necromancy?

Yes, ancestral worship can become connected to necromancy when a person seeks communication, guidance, or help from the dead.

Necromancy is the practice of trying to communicate with the dead. God forbids this. Deuteronomy 18 warns against consulting the dead. Mediumship, spirit communication, and ancestral divination are dangerous because they open doors to spirits that are not from God.

The Holy Spirit does not need help from dead relatives to guide God’s people. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

Is Ancestral Worship Idolatry?

Yes, when ancestors are given worship, prayer, offerings, fear, dependence, or spiritual authority, ancestral worship becomes idolatry.

Idolatry is not only bowing before a statue. Idolatry is giving to anyone or anything the honor, fear, trust, worship, or dependence that belongs to God alone.

Ancestral worship can become an idol when people fear ancestors more than God, obey family spirits more than Scripture, or trust ancestral rituals more than the blood of Jesus.

Common Open Doors Connected to Ancestral Worship

Family altars
Ancestor tablets
Grave offerings
Food offerings to the dead
Alcohol offerings to the dead
Burning paper money for ancestors
Incense offered to ancestors
Bowing to ancestral tablets
Prayers to the dead
Calling on ancestors for protection
Dream communication with dead relatives
Mediumship
Spirit guides called “ancestors”
Household shrines
Funeral rituals involving spirit communication
Ancestral curses
Fear of ancestral anger
Vows made to ancestors
Oaths at family altars
Generational covenants
Bloodline dedications
Objects taken from rituals
Photos or memorials used as spiritual contact points
Consulting shamans, mediums, priests, or spiritual workers to appease ancestors

Symptoms That Someone May Need Deliverance from Ancestral Worship

Not every problem is caused by ancestral worship, but these may be signs of spiritual bondage connected to the dead or family spirits:

Fear of dead relatives
Dreams of deceased family members calling you
Repeated dreams of graves, tombs, funerals, bones, or family altars
Feeling watched by dead relatives
Fear that ancestors will punish you
Torment after refusing family rituals
Pressure to return to ancestral practices
Spiritual heaviness around family altars or tombs
Hearing voices of deceased relatives
Seeing apparitions or shadows of relatives
Repeated family patterns of sickness, poverty, addiction, or premature death
Strong guilt when choosing Jesus over tradition
Feeling tied to family spirits
Difficulty renouncing ancestral rituals
Resistance to destroying ancestral objects
Confusion during prayer
Fear of dishonoring the family
Unusual oppression after funerals or ancestor ceremonies

If these are present, the person should seek the Lord, renounce the practices, close open doors, and receive prayer.

Biblical Scriptures Against Ancestral Worship and Consulting the Dead

Deuteronomy 18:10–12
God forbids divination, witchcraft, sorcery, mediumship, spiritism, and consulting the dead.

Leviticus 19:31
“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them.”

Leviticus 20:6
God sets His face against those who turn after familiar spirits.

Isaiah 8:19
“Should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”

Hebrews 9:27
“It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

Luke 16:19–31
Jesus teaches that the dead are not sent back to guide the living; people must listen to God’s Word.

1 Samuel 28
Saul sinned by seeking a medium instead of obeying God.

Exodus 20:3
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:4–5
God forbids idolatry and bowing down to false objects of worship.

1 Timothy 2:5
There is one mediator between God and man: Jesus Christ.

John 14:6
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Romans 8:14
Believers are to be led by the Spirit of God.

How to Break Free from Ancestral Worship

  1. Repent for participating in ancestral worship, offerings, prayers, altars, and rituals.
  2. Renounce all communication with the dead.
  3. Renounce all fear of ancestors.
  4. Renounce all family covenants, vows, oaths, dedications, and rituals made at altars or tombs.
  5. Remove or destroy objects connected to ancestor worship, as the Holy Spirit leads.
  6. Cancel every agreement made through food, alcohol, incense, paper money, candles, prayers, or offerings.
  7. Break generational curses in the name of Jesus Christ.
  8. Command familiar spirits and ancestral spirits to leave in Jesus’ name.
  9. Declare that Jesus Christ alone is Lord over your family line.
  10. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill every place that was cleansed.
  11. Renew your mind with the Word of God.
  12. Get deliverance if there is deep bondage, fear, dreams, torment, or generational occultism.

Deliverance Prayer to Renounce Ancestral Worship

Father God, I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ. I repent for every involvement in ancestral worship, worship of the dead, family altars, ancestor tablets, grave offerings, incense burning, food offerings, alcohol offerings, paper money offerings, prayers to the dead, and any ritual that gave honor, fear, worship, or spiritual authority to my ancestors instead of You.

I renounce all communication with the dead. I renounce all prayers to ancestors. I renounce all offerings made to ancestors. I renounce all fear of ancestral spirits. I renounce all belief that the dead can bless me, guide me, punish me, protect me, or control my destiny.

I break every covenant, vow, oath, dedication, ritual, agreement, and generational curse connected to ancestral worship. I cancel every agreement made through food, drink, incense, candles, paper money, tomb rituals, family altars, ancestral tablets, and ceremonies.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I command every familiar spirit, ancestral spirit, spirit of death, spirit of divination, spirit of idolatry, spirit of fear, and generational spirit connected to ancestor worship to leave me now.

I declare that Jesus Christ is my Lord. Jesus Christ is my mediator. Jesus Christ is my protector. Jesus Christ is my healer. Jesus Christ is my deliverer. I belong to Him alone.

Holy Spirit, cleanse me, fill me, and restore every part of my life and family line. I choose to worship the living God only. Amen.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Have I ever prayed to deceased family members?
  2. Have I ever made offerings of food, drink, incense, candles, or money to the dead?
  3. Have I ever bowed before an ancestral altar, tablet, shrine, or tomb as an act of worship?
  4. Have I ever feared that my ancestors could punish me?
  5. Have I ever asked ancestors for protection, blessing, healing, money, marriage, children, or guidance?
  6. Have I ever participated in rituals to feed, appease, invite, or honor the dead spiritually?
  7. Have I ever consulted a medium, spiritual worker, priest, shaman, or diviner to communicate with ancestors?
  8. Have I ever had dreams of dead relatives calling me, feeding me, touching me, or telling me what to do?
  9. Have I ever kept objects connected to ancestor worship in my home?
  10. Have I ever felt guilty or afraid for refusing ancestral rituals?
  11. Have I ever believed that family spirits had authority over my life?
  12. Have I ever made vows, oaths, or dedications at a family altar or tomb?
  13. Have I ever burned paper money, incense, or offerings for the dead?
  14. Have I ever believed my ancestors were my spiritual protectors?
  15. Do I need to renounce ancestral worship and receive deliverance prayer?

Final Warning and Hope

Ancestral worship may appear loving, respectful, cultural, or family-centered, but the Bible warns us not to seek the dead. We are called to worship the living God, not departed relatives. We are called to be led by the Holy Spirit, not familiar spirits. We are called to honor family without making family an idol.

Jesus Christ is greater than every family spirit, ancestral curse, generational altar, tomb ritual, and familiar spirit. You do not have to fear the dead. You do not have to serve ancestral spirits. You do not have to continue family rituals that violate Scripture.

Jesus Christ came to set the captives free.

If you have been involved in ancestral worship, repent, renounce it, close the doors, and receive deliverance. Worship belongs to God alone.

Temples to Worship False Gods: A Biblical Warning

Temples to Worship False Gods: A Biblical Warning About Idolatry, False Worship, and Spiritual Bondage

Temples to Worship False Gods: A Biblical Warning About Idolatry, False Worship, and Spiritual Bondage

What Are Temples to False Gods?

A temple is a building devoted to worship or regarded as the dwelling place of a god, gods, spirits, idols, ancestors, or other objects of religious reverence. In many religions, temples are used for offerings, prayers, rituals, sacrifices, incense, chanting, meditation, spirit communication, and worship of false gods.

Temples to false gods may include places dedicated to:

  • Hindu gods and goddesses
  • Buddhist images and idols
  • Taoist deities and ancestors
  • Pagan gods and goddesses
  • Greek and Roman deities
  • Egyptian gods
  • New Age spiritual beings
  • Witchcraft or occult deities
  • Ancestor spirits
  • Saints or angelic beings wrongly worshiped
  • Gurus or religious leaders treated as divine

From a biblical perspective, any place dedicated to the worship of another god is spiritually dangerous. God alone is worthy of worship.

Where Did Temples to False Gods Come From?

Temples to false gods have existed since ancient times. Many civilizations built temples for idols, pagan gods, fertility goddesses, sun gods, moon gods, war gods, water gods, underworld gods, and ancestral spirits.

The Bible repeatedly shows that nations built high places, altars, groves, shrines, and temples to false gods. Israel was warned many times not to follow these practices.

There is no single founder of temple worship to false gods. It comes from mankind’s rebellion against the true God and the desire to worship created things instead of the Creator.

Why Are Temples to False Gods Against God’s Word?

God’s Word is clear: His people must not worship other gods.

Exodus 20:3

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:4–5

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image… Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…”

Deuteronomy 12:2–3

God commanded Israel to destroy the places where the nations worshiped false gods, including altars, pillars, groves, and graven images.

1 Corinthians 10:20–21

Paul warned that sacrifices offered to idols are actually connected to demons, and believers cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils.

2 Corinthians 6:16

“What agreement hath the temple of God with idols?”

The Bible does not treat idol worship as harmless culture. It identifies idolatry as spiritual adultery, rebellion, and demonic agreement.

What Happens in Temples to False Gods?

Depending on the religion or practice, temples may involve:

  • Bowing before idols
  • Lighting incense
  • Chanting mantras
  • Offering food or flowers
  • Burning candles
  • Praying to false gods
  • Praying to ancestors
  • Spirit communication
  • Ritual sacrifices
  • Meditation before idols
  • Vows and dedications
  • Religious initiations
  • Healing rituals
  • Divination
  • Occult ceremonies
  • Calling on spirits for help, power, protection, money, fertility, healing, or guidance

Even if someone is only visiting, taking pictures, or “respecting the culture,” a Christian must use discernment. Bowing, praying, making offerings, lighting incense, or participating in rituals can create spiritual agreement.

Why Would Someone Go to a Temple of a False God?

People may go for many reasons:

  1. Family tradition — They were raised in that religion or culture.
  2. Curiosity — They want to explore another religion.
  3. Tourism — They visit temples while traveling.
  4. Fear — They believe a god, spirit, or ancestor may curse them if they do not participate.
  5. Need for help — They are seeking healing, money, marriage, fertility, protection, or answers.
  6. Spiritual hunger — They want supernatural experiences but do not know Jesus Christ.
  7. Peer pressure — Family or friends expect them to take part.
  8. Deception — They believe all religions lead to the same God.

But Jesus Christ is not one way among many. He is the only Way.

How Can This Hurt a Christian?

A Christian can be spiritually affected by participating in false worship, even casually.

Possible open doors include:

  • Idolatry
  • False religion
  • Familiar spirits
  • Ancestral spirits
  • Witchcraft
  • Divination
  • Religious spirits
  • Spirit guides
  • Fear
  • Confusion
  • Torment
  • Spiritual heaviness
  • Loss of peace
  • Dreams of idols, temples, serpents, dragons, dead relatives, or false gods
  • Difficulty praying or reading the Bible
  • Attraction to other religions
  • Generational bondage

A Christian belongs to Jesus Christ. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We must not come into agreement with idols. Even being in a temple that worships false gods where demonic spirits can transfer onto a person.

Can Objects From Temples Be Dangerous?

Yes. Objects bought or received from temples may be spiritually dedicated, blessed, prayed over, or connected to false worship.

This may include:

  • Statues
  • Prayer beads
  • Talismans
  • Charms
  • Incense
  • Ritual cloths
  • Deity pictures
  • Amulets
  • Temple jewelry
  • Prayer flags
  • Offerings
  • Idols
  • Ritual bowls
  • Books of chants or mantras

If an object is dedicated to a false god or used in idol worship, it should be removed and destroyed.

What Curses Can Come Through False Temple Worship?

False worship can open the door to:

1. Curse of Idolatry

Worshiping false gods breaks the first commandment.

2. Curse of False Religion

The person may become bound to another spiritual system.

3. Curse of Familiar Spirits

Prayers to ancestors, spirits, saints, gods, or goddesses can invite familiar spirits.

4. Curse of Fear

Many false religions use fear of curses, ancestors, spirits, or punishment to keep people bound.

5. Curse of Witchcraft

Some temples include rituals, charms, talismans, divination, and spirit power.

6. Generational Curses

Family temple worship, ancestral altars, vows, dedications, or offerings may affect the bloodline until renounced through Jesus Christ.

What Should a Christian Do If They Participated?

  1. Repent for participating in false worship.
  2. Renounce every false god, idol, temple ritual, offering, vow, and dedication.
  3. Destroy objects connected to false worship.
  4. Break agreements with spirits, ancestors, deities, and religious systems.
  5. Cancel every curse, vow, dedication, or ritual spoken over you.
  6. Ask Jesus to cleanse you by His blood.
  7. Seek deliverance if torment, dreams, fear, oppression, or bondage continues.

Deliverance Prayer for Renouncing Temple Worship of False Gods

Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ, I repent for any involvement with temples, altars, shrines, idols, false gods, ancestor worship, offerings, incense, rituals, vows, dedications, or prayers made to anyone or anything other than You.

I repent for bowing, praying, lighting incense, making offerings, honoring idols, participating in rituals, or coming into agreement with false worship knowingly or unknowingly.

I renounce every false god, goddess, idol, spirit, ancestor spirit, familiar spirit, temple spirit, religious spirit, and demonic power connected to false worship.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break every vow, dedication, offering, ritual, covenant, agreement, and generational tie connected to temples of false gods.

I cancel every curse, assignment, and legal right the enemy gained through idolatry, false worship, temple rituals, or objects dedicated to false gods.

I command every demon that entered through false worship, idolatry, ancestor worship, rituals, talismans, offerings, or temple objects to leave me now in the name of Jesus Christ.

Lord Jesus, wash me in Your blood. Cleanse my body, soul, spirit, mind, home, family line, and everything connected to me.

I declare that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I worship the one true God only.

In Jesus Christ’s name, amen.

Scriptures to Study

  • Exodus 20:3–5
  • Deuteronomy 12:2–3
  • Deuteronomy 18:10–12
  • Psalm 115:4–8
  • Isaiah 44:9–20
  • 1 Corinthians 10:20–21
  • 2 Corinthians 6:14–18
  • Acts 17:16
  • Acts 19:18–20
  • Revelation 9:20

Final Warning

Temples to false gods are not harmless spiritual places. They are dedicated to worship apart from the living God.

A Christian must not bow to idols, pray to false gods, light incense to spirits, make offerings, participate in rituals, or keep objects dedicated to false worship.

Jesus Christ alone is Lord.

If you have visited, worshiped, participated in rituals, made offerings, or brought home objects from temples of false gods, repent and renounce it. You may need deliverance to close every open door.

Taoism: A Biblical Warning

Taoism: A Biblical Warning About Daoism, Yin-Yang, Energy Practices, False Worship, and Spiritual Deception

Taoism: A Biblical Warning About Daoism, Yin-Yang, Energy Practices, False Worship, and Spiritual Deception

What Is Taoism?

Taoism, also spelled Daoism, is a Chinese religious and philosophical system centered around the concept of the Tao, meaning “the Way.” Taoism teaches that the Tao is the ultimate source, pattern, order, and flow behind the universe.

In simple terms, Taoism teaches people to live in harmony with the Tao, nature, balance, simplicity, and the unseen flow of life.

Some people view Taoism only as a philosophy of peace, simplicity, nature, and non-striving. Others practice Taoism as a religion involving temples, priests, gods, goddesses, spirits, rituals, offerings, talismans, ancestor practices, meditation, energy cultivation, divination, and attempts to gain longevity or immortality.

From a Christian perspective, Taoism becomes spiritually dangerous when it replaces the God of the Bible with an impersonal “Way,” spiritual energy, nature worship, ancestor worship, false gods, divination, yin-yang spirituality, talismans, occult rituals, and self-cultivation practices apart from Jesus Christ.

Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Taoism says the Tao is the way.

Jesus says He is the Way.

A Christian must not confuse the two.

Where Did Taoism Come From?

Taoism originated in ancient China. It developed over many centuries through Chinese philosophy, religion, mysticism, folk religion, ritual practices, and spiritual traditions.

Taoism is traditionally connected to Laozi, also spelled Lao Tzu, who is believed to be associated with the Tao Te Ching, one of the most important Taoist texts.

Another major figure is Zhuangzi, a Chinese philosopher whose writings shaped Taoist thought.

Taoism became both:

  1. Philosophical Taoism — focused on the Tao, nature, simplicity, non-striving, humility, and living in harmony with the natural order.
  2. Religious Taoism — involving temples, priests, rituals, gods, spirits, talismans, ceremonies, immortality practices, divination, alchemy, and ancestor-related practices.

There is no single founder of all Taoism as it exists today. Laozi is traditionally honored as a central figure, but Taoism developed through many teachers, texts, priests, sects, rituals, and spiritual movements.

Who Was Laozi?

Laozi, meaning “Old Master,” is traditionally regarded as the author of the Tao Te Ching. Some scholars debate how historical Laozi was, but within Taoism he is highly honored and sometimes even venerated in religious Taoist traditions.

The Tao Te Ching teaches about the Tao, simplicity, humility, softness, non-contention, and wu wei, often translated as “non-action” or “effortless action.”

Some of the teachings may sound peaceful or wise on the surface, but a Christian must test every spiritual system by the Word of God.

Wisdom without Christ is not salvation.

Peace without Christ is not reconciliation with God.

A “way” without Jesus is not the Way to the Father.

What Does Taoism Teach?

Taoism can vary widely, but common teachings may include:

  • The Tao as the ultimate reality or way
  • Living in harmony with nature
  • Yin and yang balance
  • Wu wei, or effortless action
  • Simplicity and humility
  • Detachment from striving
  • Meditation and inner cultivation
  • Qi, or life-force energy
  • Breath practices
  • Energy channels
  • Longevity practices
  • Immortality teachings
  • Spirit beings and deities
  • Rituals and offerings
  • Talismans and charms
  • Ancestor-related practices
  • Divination
  • Alchemy
  • Astrology and cosmology
  • Feng shui connections in Chinese spiritual systems

Some teachings sound peaceful, but Taoism is not Christianity. It does not teach salvation through Jesus Christ, repentance from sin, the cross, the blood of Jesus, the resurrection, or deliverance through Christ alone.

What Is the Tao?

The Tao means “the Way,” but in Taoism it often refers to the mysterious source and order behind everything.

In Taoism, the Tao is not the personal God of the Bible. It is often described as impersonal, beyond words, beyond form, and present in the natural flow of the universe.

The Bible teaches that God is not an impersonal force. God is personal, holy, sovereign, Creator, Father, Judge, Redeemer, and Lord.

The Tao cannot forgive sin.

The Tao did not die on the cross.

The Tao did not rise from the dead.

The Tao cannot cast out demons.

The Tao cannot save your soul.

Jesus Christ alone is Savior.

What Is Yin and Yang?

Yin and yang is a Chinese concept often associated with balance between opposite but complementary forces: dark and light, passive and active, feminine and masculine, cold and hot, earth and heaven.

Many people see yin-yang as harmless symbolism. However, in Taoist and Chinese metaphysical systems, yin-yang can become part of a spiritual worldview that replaces biblical truth with energy balance, cosmic dualism, and harmony with impersonal forces.

Christianity does not teach that good and evil are equal forces needing balance.

God is not one side of a cosmic balance.

Satan is not God’s equal opposite.

Light and darkness are not partners.

The Bible says God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.

What Is Wu Wei?

Wu wei is commonly translated as “non-action,” “effortless action,” or “acting without forcing.” It teaches alignment with the natural flow rather than striving, controlling, or forcing outcomes.

On the surface, some may compare this with trusting God, resting in Him, or not striving in the flesh. But wu wei is not the same as biblical surrender.

Biblical surrender is personal trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Wu wei is alignment with the Tao.

A Christian does not surrender to the flow of the universe. A Christian surrenders to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Is Taoism a Religion or Philosophy?

Taoism is both a philosophy and a religion.

Some people practice it as philosophy only, focusing on nature, simplicity, and wisdom sayings. Others practice it as a religion involving gods, rituals, priests, temples, offerings, talismans, ancestor practices, divination, and spirit-related ceremonies.

A Christian must not say, “It is only philosophy,” if the teachings still lead the person away from Christ.

Even a philosophy can become a false worldview.

Colossians 2:8 warns believers not to be spoiled through philosophy and vain deceit after the tradition of men and not after Christ.

Is Taoism the Same as Christianity?

No. Taoism is not the same as Christianity.

Christianity teaches:

  • One true God
  • Jesus Christ as the Son of God
  • Salvation through Jesus alone
  • Sin, repentance, forgiveness, and redemption
  • The cross and resurrection
  • The Holy Spirit
  • The authority of Scripture
  • Eternal life through Christ
  • Deliverance from demons through Jesus’ name

Taoism teaches:

  • The Tao as the way or ultimate source
  • Harmony with nature and cosmic order
  • Yin-yang balance
  • Wu wei
  • Qi or life-force cultivation
  • Rituals and spiritual practices in religious Taoism
  • Deities, immortals, spirits, and ancestors in religious Taoism
  • Self-cultivation, longevity, and mystical harmony

Christianity is not about balancing energy.

Christianity is about being reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.

Why Is Taoism Against God’s Word?

Taoism is against God’s Word when it leads people into false worship, divination, spirit communication, ancestor worship, talismans, energy practices, occult rituals, and a false path to spiritual life apart from Jesus Christ.

1. Taoism Offers Another “Way”

Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. There is no salvation in any other name. John 14:6 and Acts 4:12 clearly teach that salvation comes only through Jesus Christ.

2. Taoism Can Involve False Gods and Spirits

Religious Taoism includes many deities, immortals, spirits, and temple practices. God commands His people to have no other gods before Him.

3. Taoism Can Include Divination and Occult Practices

Some Taoist and Chinese folk religious practices involve divination, talismans, charms, astrology, spirit consultation, and rituals. Deuteronomy 18 warns against divination, enchantment, witchcraft, charmers, familiar spirits, wizards, and necromancers.

4. Taoism Can Open Doors to Familiar Spirits

Leviticus 19:31 warns God’s people not to seek after familiar spirits or wizards, saying these practices defile a person.

5. Taoism Replaces the Holy Spirit With Energy Concepts

Qi, energy cultivation, internal alchemy, and spiritual power practices are not the same as the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God, not cosmic energy.

What Practices Are Connected to Taoism?

Depending on the branch or practitioner, Taoism may involve:

  • Meditation
  • Breathwork
  • Qi cultivation
  • Qigong
  • Internal alchemy
  • Immortality practices
  • Talismans
  • Charms
  • Ritual papers
  • Offerings
  • Incense
  • Temple worship
  • Prayers to deities
  • Ancestor rites
  • Divination
  • Astrology
  • Feng shui-related practices
  • Spirit communication
  • Priestly rituals
  • Exorcistic rituals
  • Healing rituals
  • Sacred diagrams
  • Mantras or chants
  • Yin-yang philosophy
  • Five elements practices

Not every person involved in Taoism practices all of these, but these are commonly associated with Taoist or Taoist-influenced spiritual systems.

Why Would Someone Get Involved in Taoism?

People may become involved in Taoism for many reasons.

1. Desire for Peace

Taoism often presents itself as peaceful, calm, simple, and balanced.

2. Interest in Eastern Philosophy

Some people are drawn to ancient wisdom, nature-based thinking, and non-Western spirituality.

3. Search for Healing

People may seek healing through qigong, energy practices, meditation, breathwork, or Taoist medicine-related traditions.

4. Curiosity About Energy

Qi, yin-yang, meridians, and energy flow can attract people interested in New Age or alternative spirituality.

5. Cultural Tradition

Some people are born into families or cultures where Taoist practices, ancestor rites, temple rituals, or Chinese folk religion are normal.

6. Rejection of Christianity

Some people choose Taoism because they want spirituality without repentance, holiness, or submission to Jesus Christ.

7. Desire for Control

Divination, talismans, feng shui, and rituals may make people feel they can control outcomes, luck, health, money, relationships, or destiny.

8. Fascination With Mysticism

Some people are attracted to hidden knowledge, altered states, mystical experiences, immortality teachings, and secret practices.

How Can Taoism Hurt a Christian?

Taoism can hurt a Christian when they participate in practices that open doors to false worship, occult spirits, divination, energy practices, and spiritual deception.

Possible effects may include:

  • Confusion about Jesus
  • Loss of biblical discernment
  • False peace
  • Spiritual heaviness
  • Attraction to Eastern religions
  • Interest in other gods
  • Dreams of temples, spirits, ancestors, dragons, serpents, or false deities
  • Dependence on energy practices
  • Fear of bad luck
  • Dependence on talismans or charms
  • Anxiety about balance or flow
  • Occult curiosity
  • Open doors to familiar spirits
  • Difficulty praying
  • Resistance to Scripture
  • New Age deception
  • Spiritual oppression

A Christian cannot mix Taoism with Jesus.

Jesus Christ is enough.

Is Qigong Connected to Taoism?

Qigong is a Chinese practice involving breath, movement, meditation, posture, and the cultivation or movement of qi. Some forms are presented as health exercises, while others are deeply spiritual or religious.

Qigong may be connected to Taoist, Buddhist, martial arts, medical, or folk traditions.

The concern for Christians is the spiritual worldview behind it: qi energy, energy channels, internal power, altered states, spirit-related practices, and sometimes deity or ancestor involvement.

A Christian should be very cautious and avoid practices that involve energy cultivation, emptying the mind, spiritual power, occult healing, or non-Christian meditation.

Is Tai Chi Connected to Taoism?

Tai Chi is often practiced as a slow martial art or health exercise. It has connections to Chinese philosophy, yin-yang, qi, and internal energy concepts.

Some people practice it only as gentle movement. Others practice it with Taoist spiritual beliefs, energy cultivation, meditation, and martial internal power.

The question for Christians is not merely, “Is the movement slow?” The question is, “What spirit, philosophy, meditation, energy belief, or spiritual agreement is attached to this practice?”

Is Feng Shui Connected to Taoism?

Feng shui is a Chinese metaphysical system involving placement, direction, energy flow, harmony, luck, and environment. It is often connected with qi, yin-yang, the five elements, astrology, and Chinese spiritual beliefs.

Feng shui can become a form of divination and energy manipulation. It teaches people to arrange homes, objects, doors, mirrors, beds, colors, and directions to affect luck, wealth, health, relationships, or destiny.

A Christian should not trust energy flow, directional luck, or spiritual placement systems. Our blessing comes from obedience to God, not furniture arrangement.

Are Taoist Talismans and Charms Dangerous?

Yes. Taoist talismans, charms, ritual papers, amulets, and symbols can be spiritually dangerous.

Talismans are often used for protection, luck, healing, exorcism, prosperity, spiritual power, or warding off spirits. But Christians are not called to use charms for protection.

Jesus Christ is our protection.

Psalm 91 does not require a talisman.

The blood of Jesus is greater than any charm.

Using talismans can open the door to spirits behind the object.

Is Ancestor Worship Connected to Taoism?

Ancestor veneration and ancestor rituals are common in Chinese religious traditions and may overlap with Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and folk religion.

Honoring parents and remembering family history is not wrong. But praying to ancestors, offering incense or food to them, seeking help from the dead, consulting ancestral spirits, or believing ancestors can bless or curse the living is spiritually dangerous.

The Bible forbids necromancy and consulting the dead.

Believers should honor family, but they must not communicate with the dead.

What Spirits Can Be Connected to Taoism?

From a Christian deliverance perspective, Taoism may open doors to spirits such as:

  • False religion
  • Idolatry
  • Divination
  • Familiar spirits
  • Ancestor spirits
  • Spirit guides
  • Witchcraft
  • Sorcery
  • Occult healing
  • Dragon spirits
  • Serpent spirits
  • Python
  • Fear
  • Confusion
  • Religious spirits
  • Mind-binding spirits
  • False peace
  • Pride
  • Deception
  • Control
  • Death and immortality spirits
  • Luck and fortune spirits

These may operate through rituals, talismans, divination, ancestor practices, temple worship, energy work, meditation, and agreements with false gods.

What Curses Can Come Through Taoism?

Taoism can open doors to several spiritual problems when a person participates in religious or occult practices connected to it.

1. Curse of Idolatry

False gods, deities, immortals, temple worship, offerings, and rituals can open doors to idolatry.

2. Curse of Divination

Divination practices, fortune-telling, astrology, feng shui, oracles, and spirit consultation can open doors to divination spirits.

3. Curse of Familiar Spirits

Ancestor practices, spirit communication, and seeking guidance from unseen beings can open doors to familiar spirits.

4. Curse of Witchcraft

Talismans, charms, rituals, spell-like papers, and occult healing practices can open doors to witchcraft.

5. Curse of False Religion

Taoism can bind a person to another spiritual system that rejects Jesus Christ as the only Way.

6. Curse of Fear

Fear of imbalance, bad luck, curses, spirits, ancestors, or wrong placement can create bondage.

7. Curse of Confusion

Mixing Jesus with Taoism can bring spiritual confusion and double-mindedness.

8. Generational Curse

If Taoist worship, ancestor rituals, divination, talismans, or Chinese folk religious practices exist in the family line, there may be generational bondage that needs to be renounced.

What Should a Christian Do If They Practiced Taoism?

A Christian should repent, renounce, destroy occult objects, and close every spiritual door.

1. Confess It as Sin

Acknowledge any idolatry, divination, occult practice, talisman use, ancestor worship, or false worship connected to Taoism.

2. Repent

Ask God to forgive you for seeking another way, another source, another spirit, or another form of spiritual power.

3. Renounce Taoism

Verbally renounce Taoism, Daoism, yin-yang spirituality, qi energy, talismans, ancestor worship, divination, false gods, and every spirit behind it.

4. Destroy Occult Objects

Remove and destroy Taoist talismans, charms, deity statues, ritual papers, incense dedicated to false gods, altar items, divination tools, feng shui cures, and occult books.

5. Break Agreements

Break every agreement with Taoist gods, ancestors, spirits, temples, priests, rituals, vows, dedications, initiations, and family altars.

6. Cancel Curses

Cancel every curse, dedication, ritual, offering, vow, or spiritual agreement made over you or your bloodline.

7. Seek Deliverance

If oppression, nightmares, torment, fear, spiritual manifestations, or bondage continues, seek biblical deliverance.

Deliverance Prayer for Renouncing Taoism

Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ, I come before You in repentance.

I confess and repent for any involvement in Taoism, Daoism, false religion, idolatry, yin-yang spirituality, qi energy, qigong, Taoist meditation, Taoist rituals, talismans, charms, feng shui, ancestor worship, temple worship, offerings, incense rituals, divination, spirit communication, false gods, immortals, deities, and every occult practice connected to Taoism.

I repent for seeking another way instead of Jesus Christ. I repent for trusting energy, balance, luck, rituals, talismans, ancestors, spirits, false gods, or the Tao instead of trusting the living God.

I renounce Taoism and every spirit behind it.

I renounce the Tao as a false way. I declare that Jesus Christ alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

I renounce yin-yang spirituality, qi energy, internal alchemy, immortality practices, talismans, charms, divination, ancestor spirits, spirit guides, false gods, temple rituals, offerings, and every religious or occult agreement connected to Taoism.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break every vow, initiation, dedication, ritual, offering, covenant, prayer, incense offering, altar agreement, family agreement, generational agreement, and spiritual contract connected to Taoism.

I renounce every familiar spirit, ancestor spirit, false religious spirit, divination spirit, witchcraft spirit, sorcery spirit, dragon spirit, serpent spirit, python spirit, fear spirit, confusion spirit, and spirit of deception.

I command every demon that entered through Taoism, Daoism, false worship, divination, talismans, ancestor rituals, qi energy, feng shui, qigong, meditation, or occult practices to leave me now in the name of Jesus Christ.

I cancel every curse, assignment, ritual, dedication, family altar, bloodline agreement, and demonic claim connected to Taoism.

I declare that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. My body, soul, spirit, mind, family, home, bloodline, relationships, calling, and destiny belong to Jesus Christ.

Lord Jesus, wash me in Your blood. Cleanse my mind, my spirit, my home, my family line, and everything connected to me.

Fill me with the Holy Spirit. Restore my discernment, peace, identity, authority, and relationship with You.

In Jesus Christ’s name, amen.

Final Warning

Taoism may appear peaceful, balanced, natural, and philosophical, but it is not Christianity.

It offers another way.

It teaches harmony with the Tao instead of salvation through Jesus Christ.

It can include false gods, ancestor practices, talismans, qi energy, divination, rituals, and occult spirituality.

Jesus Christ is not one way among many.

Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

If you have been involved in Taoism, Daoism, yin-yang spirituality, qigong, feng shui, ancestor worship, Taoist rituals, talismans, deity worship, or energy practices, repent and renounce it.

You may need deliverance to close the doors and break the legal rights of the enemy.
