Why the Law of Attraction Doesn’t Work – and Why It’s Spiritually Dangerous

Sally sat across from me, tears in her eyes. “The law of attraction ruined my life,” she said. I was stunned. What happened? How could something so widely praised destroy someone so deeply?
As we dug deeper, it became clear: the Law of Attraction isn’t harmless self-help. It’s a spiritual snare. Behind its glowing promises lies a deceptive power that opens doors to torment.
The Law of Attraction claims you can attract anything—wealth, health, love—through your thoughts. “Your mind creates your reality,” they say. But if that’s true, then every failure, sickness, or tragedy becomes your fault. That’s not freedom. That’s bondage.
What Does the Bible Say?
Let’s be clear—humans are not gods. We do not have supernatural powers apart from God (Deuteronomy 8:14-18). The Bible teaches:

All power belongs to God alone (Job 1:12; Matthew 28:18).

We don’t control reality—God does (Colossians 1:16-17).

Only God has authority over life and death (Ecclesiastes 8:8).

Seeking power outside of God invites judgment (Micah 2:1-4; Revelation 13:4-10).
-
God empowers believers through the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8; Philippians 4:13).
These scriptures show us that the Law of Attraction is a counterfeit power. It offers control without submission, blessings without relationship, and results without repentance.
How Is the Law of Attraction Promoted?
The Law of Attraction is embedded in various occult and New Age practices:

Meditation (apart from God’s Word)

Yoga (Hindu practice of becoming one with Brahman)

Crystal healing
-
Mind over matter
-
Cosmic ordering
-
Positive thinking movements (e.g., Think and Grow Rich)
-
Theophostic counseling
-
Visualization and manifestation techniques
These practices are not neutral. They originate from religious systems that reject the God of the Bible and promote self-deification—a spiritual trap as old as Eden (Genesis 3:5).
The Roots of Deception
Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret popularized the Law of Attraction globally. Her inspiration? Jerry and Esther Hicks, who claim to channel a spirit group named "Abraham"—entities they contacted through Ouija boards and psychic meditation.
Esther once described how her body began to breathe and move involuntarily. A message appeared in her mind: “I am Abraham. I am your spiritual guide.” These are not harmless techniques—they are invitations to demonic spirits (1 Timothy 4:1; 1 Corinthians 10:20).
Jerry Hicks himself admitted being influenced by Napoleon Hill, who in Think and Grow Rich admitted conversing with spiritual “counselors” through visualization—again, unclean spirits masquerading as guides.
What Happens When People Practice the Law of Attraction?
Sally’s story is one of many. People report hearing voices, seeing lights, and experiencing mental torment. Some spiral into anxiety, madness, or even suicidal despair. Why? Because they opened a door to the demonic realm while seeking power.
God warns us not to seek lesser sources of power. From Saul consulting the witch of Endor (1 Samuel 28) to the magicians of Egypt facing judgment (Exodus 7:11–12), Scripture is clear: going outside of God’s truth invites trouble.
Biblical Power Comes from Relationship
True spiritual authority doesn’t come from the universe—it comes from the Creator of the universe. The missing piece in the Law of Attraction is God Himself.
The Bible tells us to:

Seek God’s Kingdom first (Matthew 6:33)

Ask according to His will (1 John 5:14)

Trust in His goodness (James 1:16-17)
It’s not about visualizing a car or spouse into your life. It’s about aligning with God’s will and trusting Him for provision, protection, and peace (Philippians 4:6-9).
Jesus, Not the Universe, Is Our Source
The Law of Attraction presents God as an impersonal force—a cosmic genie. But God is personal, holy, and relational. Jesus is the only way to the Father (John 14:6), not positive thoughts or meditative rituals.
If you’ve dabbled in these practices, it’s not too late. Repent. Renounce every agreement made with false spiritual power. Ask Jesus to cleanse you, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. God desires a relationship with you—not rituals.
