Ouija Boards: The Doorway to Demons and Why God Forbids It

Introduction

The Ouija board—often marketed as a “game”—has been a tool of spiritual deception for more than a century. What many believe to be harmless fun or a way to “talk to ghosts” is, in reality, a direct invitation for demonic spirits to communicate with humans. Behind the playful exterior lies a practice God clearly forbids in His Word.

In this article, we’ll uncover the history, beliefs, and spiritual dangers behind the Ouija board, explaining why it’s a form of divination and why no Christian should ever touch it.

What Is the Ouija Board?

The Ouija board, also called a “spirit board” or “talking board,” is a flat board inscribed with the letters A–Z, numbers 0–9, and the words yes, no, and goodbye. Players lightly rest their fingers on a movable pointer called a “planchette.” When questions are asked, the planchette appears to move on its own, spelling out answers from supposed “spirits.”

What many fail to realize is that this movement is not random or subconscious—it is spiritual. The Ouija board serves as a portal, a focal point for communicating with unseen entities that are not the souls of the dead but deceptive demonic spirits.

What Were Their Beliefs?

Those who developed and used the Ouija board believed it was a means to contact the spirit world. In the late 19th century, during the rise of Spiritualism—a movement that taught the living could communicate with the dead—mediums and occultists sought tools to make this easier.

Spiritualists believed the dead lingered near the living and could offer wisdom or comfort. The Ouija board was designed to “simplify” these sΓ©ances, giving even ordinary people a supposed way to hear from deceased loved ones or guides.

But Scripture makes it clear: the dead do not speak to the living. “There shall not be found among you anyone who practices divination, or who calls up the dead” (Deuteronomy 18:10–11). These “voices” are not from God but from familiar spirits—demons imitating human souls to deceive.

Who Created the Idea?

The Ouija board was commercialized in 1890 by Elijah Bond, a businessman, and Charles Kennard, founder of the Kennard Novelty Company in Baltimore. The name “Ouija” reportedly came through the board itself when asked what it should be called—it spelled “O-U-I-J-A,” which users later discovered was an Egyptian word meaning “good luck.”

But this so-called “good luck” was anything but. The first patent even described the board as a device “to communicate with the unseen.” What began as a parlor game became a gateway to spiritual darkness. Later, William Fuld, who took over production, admitted he was “guided by the board” in his business decisions—a chilling statement showing that even its creator came under demonic influence.

Who Is Their God or gods?

In the occult world, there is no worship of the true God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth. Practitioners of spirit communication are often deceived into serving false spirits who masquerade as angels or deceased loved ones. These are demons, fallen angels aligned with Satan (2 Corinthians 11:14).

When people use the Ouija board, they unknowingly submit their spiritual authority to these demonic beings. Every letter spelled out, every question asked, becomes an invitation. They are not speaking to God—they are entering a counterfeit form of revelation.

The Purpose and Use of the Ouija Board

The Ouija board’s purpose is to act as a communication bridge between humans and the spirit realm. It is used for:

  • Spirit communication – talking to “dead” relatives or unknown entities.

  • Gaining knowledge – asking questions about the future, love, or destiny.

  • Entertainment – many use it out of curiosity or as a “party game.”

Regardless of intent, the Ouija board is a form of divination, because it seeks information from spiritual forces outside of God’s will. The Bible strictly forbids this:

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them.” — Leviticus 19:31

Even innocent curiosity can open a door to spiritual oppression, nightmares, voices, and tormenting spirits.

Why People Get Involved

People are drawn to the Ouija board for several reasons:

  • Curiosity about the unknown or fascination with the supernatural.

  • Grief—wanting to speak to deceased loved ones.

  • Entertainment—believing it’s just a game.

  • Peer pressure—friends encouraging participation.

  • Seeking answers that only God can give.

But every session comes with a spiritual cost. Once the door is open, demonic entities can attach themselves to individuals, homes, or objects. Many who used the board report cold presences, whispers, sleep paralysis, and uncontrollable fear afterward.

Is It Divination?

Yes. The Ouija board is divination—the seeking of hidden knowledge through spiritual means outside God’s direction. Scripture warns repeatedly against this practice.

  • “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.” — 1 Samuel 15:23

  • “And when they say to you, ‘Consult the mediums and spiritists,’ should not a people consult their God?” — Isaiah 8:19

The Ouija board replaces prayer with necromancy, faith with deception, and the Holy Spirit with lying spirits.

Why It Is Against the Bible

  1. It seeks knowledge apart from God — replacing divine wisdom with demonic deception.

  2. It involves contact with the dead, which is strictly forbidden.

  3. It opens the door to demonic possession and oppression.

  4. It denies the sufficiency of God’s Word, looking instead to false revelations.

  5. It offends God, who calls such acts detestable (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).

The only true communication with the spiritual realm should come through prayer to God the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Closing

The Ouija board is not a toy—it’s a tool of the enemy. It disguises itself as harmless fun but draws unsuspecting souls into darkness. What starts as curiosity can end in bondage.

If you have ever used a Ouija board, repent, renounce the contact, and ask Jesus to cleanse and protect you. Break every agreement made through that act in prayer.

“Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7

Freedom and truth are found only in Jesus Christ, not in wooden boards or whispered voices from the shadows.
