Mind Reading (Telepathy): A Spiritual Counterfeit Exposed
Mind reading, also known as telepathy, is often portrayed as a mysterious gift that allows one person to “read” another’s thoughts or emotions. While the world may romanticize it as intuition, psychic ability, or mental synchronization, discerning Christians must examine the spiritual roots, the purpose, and the origin of this practice. Is it from God or is it a deceptive modality rooted in occult forces?
Let’s explore what’s really behind the practice of mind reading and how to spiritually discern its source.
What Is Mind Reading (Telepathy)?
Telepathy is defined as the ability to transfer thoughts, emotions, or information from one person to another without using known sensory channels. The term itself was coined in the late 19th century by Frederic W. H. Myers, a British researcher and founding member of the Society for Psychical Research. He wasn’t a Bible-believing Christian, but rather deeply entrenched in spiritualism, séances, and the paranormal.
Who Was the Founder and What Was His Spirituality?
Frederic Myers and his colleagues were not just scientific observers—they were spiritual experimenters, fascinated with life after death and spirit communication. Myers' beliefs leaned toward universalism, psychic evolution, and mediumship—far removed from biblical truth. He frequently consulted mediums and believed that the dead could guide the living through “mental impressions.”
Clearly, this modality did not originate from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It emerged from a culture steeped in spiritualism, which directly violates Deuteronomy 18:10–12 where God forbids communicating with familiar spirits.
What Culture Birthed Telepathy?
Telepathy, as popularized in modern times, is deeply tied to Western occultism and Eastern mysticism. Ancient Hindu texts mention similar psychic phenomena tied to kundalini energy, a serpent-like force said to awaken the third eye. This is a counterfeit to the Holy Spirit and ties mind reading to the New Age movement, not the Bible.
From Tibet to Victorian England, telepathy was viewed as a mystical path to divine enlightenment. However, Scripture warns us in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that "Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."
Who Is the ‘God’ Behind Mind Reading?
Mind reading is not empowered by the Holy Spirit but by familiar spirits—demonic entities that mimic knowledge and insight. These spirits deceive the practitioner and the one being read, creating a counterfeit spiritual experience that draws people further away from Christ.
The “god” behind telepathy is not the Lord Jesus Christ—it is the god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4) who blinds unbelievers.
What Is Its Purpose—and Why Is It Dangerous?
Mind reading creates a sense of power, superiority, and enlightenment. It lures people into dependency on spiritual sources that are not God. It also subtly promotes rebellion against God’s order, as it bypasses prayer, discernment, and godly wisdom.
In deliverance ministry, I have seen many individuals oppressed by spirits of control, fear, confusion, and witchcraft because they unknowingly opened themselves up to demonic influences through telepathy and “mental connections.”
What Can You Do?

Renounce any involvement with mind reading or psychic abilities.

Repent and break soul ties or covenants with false spiritual powers.

Apply the Blood of Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse your mind.
