The Ancient Power Behind Runes

The Ancient Power Behind Runes

The Ancient Power Behind Runes

Runes are more than ancient letters—they are gateways into a world of occult symbolism and pagan worship. Originating in the early Germanic and Nordic cultures, runes were used not only for writing but also for magic, divination, and invoking spiritual powers. The word “rune” itself means “secret” or “whisper,” indicating its mysterious and hidden purpose.

These letters—engraved on stones, weapons, and coffins—were believed to contain mystical power to foretell the future, protect against harm, or curse one’s enemies. Their connection to gods, cosmic forces, and elements such as fire, water, and wind made them central to pagan spirituality.

Today, runes have made a quiet comeback through New Age practices, tarot readings, and “rune stone divination” kits sold online. Many see them as harmless tools for self-discovery, but spiritually, they open doors to demonic forces disguised as ancient wisdom.

Who Created Runes?

The runic alphabet, also known as the Futhark, originated among early Germanic tribes between the 2nd and 8th centuries AD. The mythology surrounding their origin is tied to Odin, the chief Norse god. According to legend, Odin hung himself on the “World Tree,” Yggdrasil, for nine nights in a self-sacrificial act to gain knowledge of the runes. He then passed them on to humanity as magical symbols.

This story reveals the spiritual deception behind runes. Their origin comes from a pagan god—not the God of the Bible, but a counterfeit deity associated with sorcery and necromancy. The use of runes was considered sacred, often reserved for priests and seers who practiced divination to receive “messages” from the gods.

Who Are Their Gods?

The Norse pantheon worshiped multiple deities—Odin, Thor, Freyja, Loki, and others—each representing forces of nature and human emotion. Runes were often linked to these gods, each letter representing a divine power or aspect. For example, Fehu symbolized wealth and fertility; Tiwaz was associated with war and justice; and Algiz represented protection by invoking spirits.

In truth, these “gods” are not gods at all—they are demonic spirits masquerading as divine beings. Scripture clearly warns that “the gods of the nations are idols” (Psalm 96:5) and that worshipping or invoking them brings spiritual bondage.

Purpose of Runes: Divination and Magic

Runes were used in two primary ways: writing and divination. While their written use appears innocent, their deeper meaning lies in spiritual communication. People would cast rune stones, interpret their patterns, and seek guidance from the spirit world. This practice mirrors modern-day tarot reading or psychic channeling.

The Bible strongly condemns divination:

“There shall not be found among you anyone who... practices divination, or interprets omens, or a sorcerer.” – Deuteronomy 18:10

When one uses runes to “gain insight” or “tap into universal energy,” they unknowingly enter into spiritual communication with demonic entities. These entities disguise themselves as ancestral guides or gods, but their goal is always the same—to deceive, enslave, and separate the soul from God’s truth.

Why People Use Runes Today

Many are drawn to runes because they appear ancient, mystical, and empowering. They promise wisdom, guidance, and protection—appealing to those seeking spiritual answers outside the Bible. Others use runes as jewelry or tattoos, unaware of their symbolic invocation of pagan deities.

The New Age movement promotes runes as tools for “energy alignment” or “manifestation.” This may sound harmless, but these practices mirror witchcraft and sorcery by seeking power apart from God.

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.” – 1 Samuel 15:23

Is It Divination, Witchcraft, or New Age?

Runes encompass all three. They are a form of divination (seeking supernatural guidance), witchcraft (invoking spiritual powers), and New Age mysticism (seeking inner enlightenment apart from Christ).

While modern practitioners may claim they are using runes for art, meditation, or “positive energy,” the symbols remain spiritually charged. The enemy uses ancient symbols as entry points—gateways to influence the soul and mind.

Can Someone Be a Victim?

If someone uses runes against another person—through curses or energy projection—Christians are protected under the blood of Jesus Christ. However, those not walking in the authority of Christ may feel the effects of spiritual oppression. The key to protection is living in obedience to God’s Word, wearing the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–18), and renouncing any past involvement with occult items.

Why Deliverance May Be Needed

Anyone who has owned, worn, or used runes should renounce them through prayer. Demons can attach themselves to occult objects, and the use of runes—whether intentional or not—invites spiritual contamination. Deliverance involves repentance, breaking agreement with demonic powers, and cleansing your home and life of any occult symbols.

Pray:

“Lord Jesus, I repent for any involvement with runes or divination. I renounce all pagan gods and occult symbols. Cleanse me with Your blood and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

“Did you know runes—those ancient Nordic symbols—were never meant for art or writing alone? They were tools of divination linked to pagan gods like Odin. Each symbol represented a spirit or power used to predict the future or cast spells. But the Bible calls these practices abominations! (Deut. 18:10–12). If you’ve ever used runes or kept them as jewelry, it’s time to renounce them and close the door to the enemy. Jesus Christ alone gives wisdom, protection, and truth.
