The Deception of Precognition and Premonition: Why Seeing the Future Is Against God’s Word

The Deception of Precognition and Premonition: Why Seeing the Future Is Against God’s Word

Throughout history, mankind has been fascinated with knowing the future. Whether through oracles, fortune tellers, psychic dreams, or modern-day “intuitives,” people have sought glimpses of what lies ahead. Two such practices—precognition (the ability to know future events before they happen) and premonition (a strong feeling or vision that something is about to occur)—are forms of divination, condemned by God in Scripture.

What Are Precognition and Premonition?

Precognition is the supposed ability to foresee future events before they occur, often through extrasensory perception (ESP) or dreams. Premonition, on the other hand, is more emotional—a gut sense or intuitive warning that something is about to happen. Both imply that a person can access future knowledge outside of God’s revelation.

While some may view these experiences as harmless or even a spiritual gift, the Bible makes a clear distinction between the guidance of the Holy Spirit and demonic imitation through occult practices.

“There shall not be found among you anyone who practices divination or interprets omens or a sorcerer.” — Deuteronomy 18:10

Who Popularized These Ideas?

The belief in foreknowledge outside of divine revelation can be traced back to ancient pagan religions. The Greeks worshipped oracles like the Oracle of Delphi, who claimed to speak on behalf of Apollo, the sun god, predicting future wars and destinies.

In modern times, psychical researchers like J.B. Rhine from Duke University popularized precognition through parapsychology in the 1930s. Rhine claimed that human consciousness could transcend time and space to perceive future events. This opened doors for modern-day psychics and “prophets” who rely on spirit guides instead of the Holy Spirit.

Who Is Their God or Gods?

Behind these abilities lies no neutral power. Scripture reveals that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Demonic spirits often provide “accurate” information to gain trust and lure individuals deeper into deception.

Those who practice or seek out precognition or premonition unknowingly tap into the second heaven—the demonic realm—where familiar spirits imitate divine revelation. These spirits mimic truth, offer partial insights, and produce fear, anxiety, and bondage instead of peace.

Purpose and Use of These Practices

People turn to precognition and premonition out of fear and curiosity. They desire control—wanting to know what will happen so they can prepare, avoid pain, or gain advantage. Some use it to “warn” others of danger, believing it’s a gift of protection. However, the Bible shows that true prophecy is only revealed by the Holy Spirit and never originates from the soul or psychic ability.

“Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.” — Amos 3:7

The danger lies in the source of the revelation. Any knowledge not given by God opens a spiritual gateway to demonic influence. Once a person trusts their feelings, dreams, or “intuition” over Scripture, they are walking in divination.

Why It Is Against God

Precognition and premonition attempt to access forbidden knowledge that belongs only to God.

“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us.” — Deuteronomy 29:29

This practice directly opposes God’s sovereignty and places man in the position of the divine—seeking to know what only God should reveal. It invites spirits of false prophecy, fear, and deception.

Many believers who dabble in “gut feelings” or prophetic dreams without testing the source may unknowingly open themselves to familiar spirits that cause confusion, nightmares, and spiritual oppression.

Is It Divination?

Yes. Precognition and premonition are forms of divination. Both seek hidden knowledge from spiritual sources apart from God. These practices align with witchcraft, astrology, and psychic reading—all of which Scripture forbids.

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them.” — Leviticus 19:31

Why Do People Get Involved?

People are often desperate for answers—about their future, relationships, or fears. When they don’t fully trust God’s timing, they open themselves to counterfeit spiritual experiences. The devil preys on this vulnerability, using seemingly innocent “feelings” or “visions” to plant seeds of fear and control.

True believers must discern between the gift of prophecy and psychic foreknowledge. The Holy Spirit leads to peace, repentance, and alignment with Scripture; demonic precognition leads to anxiety, obsession, and pride.

Closing Thoughts

If you have experienced or practiced precognition or premonition, repent and renounce it in Jesus’ name. Break any soul ties to false revelation and ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse your spiritual senses.

“When they say to you, ‘Consult the mediums and the spiritists,’ should not a people consult their God?” — Isaiah 8:19

Only God knows the future, and He reveals it in His timing to those who seek Him in humility.
