Fetishes and Divination: Spiritual Dangers You Must Know
A fetish is an inanimate object believed to be inhabited by a spirit or supernatural force. These objects often hold spiritual or mystical significance in certain cultures, where they are thought to bring protection, power, luck, or even harm to others. While fetishes are commonly associated with African traditional religions, forms of fetishism exist worldwide, including voodoo, animistic religions, and some indigenous practices.
For Christians, fetishes are strongly condemned in the Bible. Relying on objects for spiritual power or guidance is considered divination and idolatry, both of which put people in danger of spiritual deception and demonic influence.
Cultural Origins and Beliefs
Fetishes have roots primarily in West African cultures, where traditional spiritual systems teach that spirits can inhabit objects to protect, bless, or curse. Practitioners often believe these spirits can grant favors, control events, or influence people. In these traditions:
Fetishes can include carved figures, stones, amulets, charms, or other objects thought to house spirits.
The spirits associated with fetishes are often linked to ancestors, nature deities, or local gods.
These objects are treated with rituals, offerings, and prayers to appease or activate the spirit within.
For example, in the Dahomey region of West Africa, fetish priests known as Vodunsi may maintain collections of spiritual objects, each assigned a specific purpose, such as protection from enemies, wealth, or fertility.
Purpose and Use of Fetishes
The purpose of fetishes is typically to gain supernatural advantage or protection. Some common uses include:Protection from spiritual or physical harm.
Gaining favor or influence over others.
Healing or divination through the object’s perceived spiritual energy.
Curses or spells intended to harm someone else.
People may be drawn to fetishes out of fear, desire for control, or curiosity. Many are unaware that involvement with such objects can open doors to demonic oppression, as the Bible warns against seeking power outside God.
Biblical Warning: Why Fetishes Are Against God
The Bible explicitly forbids consulting spirits, relying on objects for power, or practicing divination:Deuteronomy 18:10–12: "There shall not be found among you anyone who… practices divination, or is a soothsayer… for all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord."
Leviticus 19:31: "Do not turn to mediums or seek out the dead, and so make yourselves unclean by them."
Exodus 20:3–5: God commands His people not to worship other gods or any images.
Fetishes are idolatrous by nature, as they attempt to channel spiritual power through an object rather than through God. Even if an object appears to provide protection or blessing, Christians are warned that this is false security and can be a gateway to demonic influence.
Fetishes and Divination
Yes, using fetishes is a form of divination. Divination is any attempt to gain knowledge, power, or guidance through supernatural means apart from God. When a person consults a fetish for luck, guidance, or to influence others, they are relying on spirits instead of God’s Word. This opens the door to spiritual deception, oppression, and bondage (Acts 16:16–18).Why People Get Involved
People are drawn to fetishes for various reasons:Fear of harm or misfortune
Desire for control over events or others
Cultural tradition and family influence
Curiosity about the occult
Desire for personal gain, protection, or success
However, the Bible teaches that all power, wisdom, and protection come only from God, not from objects or spirits (James 1:5; Ephesians 6:10–18).
Conclusion
Fetishes are not harmless cultural objects; they are spiritually dangerous. Christians are called to avoid all forms of divination, occult practices, and idolatry. Seeking guidance, protection, or power outside God opens doors to demonic influence and spiritual bondage. Instead, believers should seek wisdom, protection, and strength through Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God.Teresa Morin
