Understanding the Enemy: How Satan Attacks and How to Overcome Through Spiritual Warfare
Before believers can walk in total victory and transformation, they must understand their enemy. Jesus warned in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” Satan’s goal is to destroy every area of a Christian’s life—finances, health, family, purpose, and peace—so that God’s people never manifest the fullness of who they are in Christ.
This is why discernment of the enemy’s strategy is essential. You cannot fight what you do not understand. Just as an army studies the tactics of its opponent, so must the Body of Christ understand the kingdom of darkness and how it operates in the unseen realms.

8 Steps to Freedom
The Three Realms of Existence
To understand how Satan attacks, we must first understand the three realms of existence revealed in Scripture:
-
The Third Heaven – This is the throne of God, the place of divine authority and eternal light. It is where Jesus Christ reigns as King of kings. (2 Corinthians 12:2-4)

The Second Heaven – This is the realm of principalities and powers, the spiritual dimension where Satan and his fallen angels operate. It is the unseen battlefield between heaven and earth. (Ephesians 6:12)

The First Heaven – This is the natural realm where mankind dwells—the earth. This is the physical stage where spiritual forces of good and evil contend for human souls.
When Adam and Eve sinned, they surrendered the dominion God gave them over the earth. Through disobedience, they opened the door for the second heaven—Satan’s realm—to influence and control the first heaven. From that moment, the enemy gained access to humanity through sin, thoughts, and emotions. The key is disobedience, and the enemy has a legal right to you.
Satan’s Fall from Heaven
Satan was once a beautiful archangel named Lucifer, created with splendor and power (Ezekiel 28:12–17). Pride led him to rebel against God’s authority. He desired to exalt himself above the Most High (Isaiah 14:12–15). Because of his rebellion, he and one-third of the angels were cast down to the earth.
This fallen being did not lose his ambition—he redirected it. Since he could not overthrow God in heaven, he now seeks to oppose God’s image in man on earth. Humanity became his target because man carries the likeness and authority of God. Through deception, Satan continues his war, attempting to draw people into sin and separation from God.
Understanding Satan’s Nature and Strategy
Satan’s character has never changed. He is still the accuser, deceiver, and destroyer. In Revelation 12:10, he is called the “accuser of the brethren.” His primary weapon is deception—planting thoughts and lies to distort truth and lead believers into disobedience.
Just as he deceived Eve in the Garden, he continues to whisper, “Did God really say?” (Genesis 3:1). His purpose is to make you doubt God’s Word, question your identity, and act on emotions instead of faith.
Once you agree with his lies, you give him legal access. This opens doors for oppression—sickness, confusion, anxiety, poverty, and fear. He builds strongholds in the mind through wrong belief systems, lies, and unhealed wounds.
The enemy attacks the spirit, soul, and body:

In the spirit, he tries to separate you from intimacy with God.

In the soul (mind, will, emotions), he injects fear (fiery darts), rejection, shame, and self-accusation, and more.

In the body, he manifests his work through disease, infirmity, and exhaustion.
Remember—every attack begins with a thought. If the enemy can control your thoughts, he can control your emotions, and then your actions. That is why Scripture commands: “Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
How Satan Gains Access

Through Sin and Disobedience – When we choose to act against God’s Word, we step out from under His protection. Like David, who numbered Israel against God’s will (1 Chronicles 21:1), disobedience opens the door for demonic influence and consequence.

Through Unforgiveness and Bitterness – Ephesians 4:26-27 warns, “Do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil a foothold.” Unforgiveness invites tormenting spirits.

Through Fear and Anxiety – Fear is not from God (2 Timothy 1:7). When we agree with fear, we align with Satan’s nature. Fear opens the door for torment and disease.

Through Rebellion and Pride – Like Saul, who sought the approval of men over obedience to God, rebellion causes the Spirit of the Lord to withdraw. It allows an evil spirit to enter (1 Samuel 16:14).

Through Occult Practices and False Doctrine – Satan’s kingdom thrives on deception. False gospels, New Age practices, witchcraft, and occultism open spiritual gateways for demonic power to infiltrate lives and even churches.
Recognizing the Invisible Battle
Ephesians 6:12 tells us, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places.”
This means your real battle isn’t with people—it’s with invisible entities that influence thoughts, emotions, and actions. Every negative emotion, every accusation, every lie that contradicts God’s Word is a spiritual voice from the kingdom of darkness.
When you hear thoughts like “I’m worthless,” “God doesn’t love me,” or “I’ll never change,” those are not your thoughts. They are fiery darts from the enemy designed to separate you from God’s truth. The moment you agree with them, they become strongholds.
But God has given believers the authority to overcome. Jesus said in Luke 10:19, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.”
How to Overcome the Enemy

Recognize the Source of the Attack – Ask, “Where is this thought coming from?” If it contradicts God’s Word, cast it down immediately.

Repent and Close the Door – Confess any sin that opened the door to the enemy. Repentance shuts off the devil’s access.

Renew Your Mind with Truth – Fill your mind with the Word of God. When you replace lies with Scripture, you uproot the enemy’s influence. (Romans 12:2)

Use Your Authority in Christ – Speak the Word of God out loud. Command the enemy to flee in Jesus’ name.

Walk in Obedience and Faith – Satan cannot touch what is covered by the blood of Jesus and walking in obedience.

Stay Filled with the Holy Spirit – A clean but empty heart invites reentry of evil spirits (Luke 11:24–26). Fill your life with worship, prayer, and the Word.
