The Truth About Medicine Men: Why Christians Must Say No
In today’s spiritually diverse world, many are turning to traditional healers known as medicine men, often found in Native American and tribal cultures. These individuals function as shamans, spiritual intermediaries, and healers. But should Christians seek healing or guidance from them?
The answer is a resounding no—and here's why.
What Is a Medicine Man?
A medicine man is typically a male shaman or spiritual healer who engages in rituals to heal the body, mind, and soul. These rituals are not based on science or biblical principles but draw from pagan spiritual practices, ancestral worship, and interaction with spirit guides. Their culture is steeped in animism—the belief that spirits exist in animals, rocks, rivers, and other elements of nature.
Their power comes from spiritual forces, but these are not from the Holy Spirit. These practices often involve chanting, drumming, trances, and altered states of consciousness—tools that open spiritual gateways. But these gateways lead to demonic torment, not divine healing.
Who Are They Really Calling On?
The core belief of medicine men is that healing comes through appeasing or manipulating spirits—spirits that masquerade as helpers but are actually demons (2 Corinthians 11:14). These entities do not bring peace or wholeness. Instead, people who open themselves up to these forces often begin experiencing:

Hearing voices

Seeing flickering lights

Mental torment
-
Confusion and depression
-
Thoughts of suicide
What may begin as a "healing session" ends in spiritual bondage and psychological devastation.
What Does the Bible Say?
God warned His people against going to sorcerers, diviners, and mediums:
“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.” – Leviticus 19:31
King Saul's life is a chilling example. In desperation, he consulted the witch of Endor. That single decision brought judgment, and ultimately, his death (1 Samuel 28). When we seek power, healing, or knowledge outside of God’s truth, we open ourselves to judgment and deception.
God's Healing is Pure and Holy
True healing comes from Jehovah Rapha—the Lord who heals. He invites us to trust in Jesus Christ, who bore our iniquities and heals our wounds (Isaiah 53:5). Turning to a lesser power is not only idolatry, it invites spiritual contamination.
