The Chinese Birth Chart: A Christian Warning

The Chinese Birth Chart, sometimes called the Chinese Gender Prediction Chart, is an ancient method to determine an unborn baby’s gender based on the mother’s age and the month of conception. Said to have been discovered nearly 700 years ago in a royal tomb near Beijing, this chart has gained popularity worldwide, primarily through online platforms and parenting forums.

Origins and Founder

Although widely attributed to ancient Chinese tradition, the exact origins of the chart remain unclear. It’s believed that the method was created during the Qing Dynasty, with some claims linking it to the Chinese imperial family, who may have used it for planning lineage and succession. However, there is no record of a specific “founder,” and much of the history is shrouded in legend rather than documented fact.

The chart is based on the Chinese lunar calendar, not the Gregorian calendar used in the West. This calendar aligns with astrology and traditional Chinese cosmology, involving concepts such as yin and yang, the Five Elements, and the I Ching (Book of Changes)—tools often used for divination and spiritual insight in ancient Chinese religions.

Underlying Feelings and Religion

The belief system supporting the Chinese Birth Chart is steeped in Daoism, Chinese folk religion, and astrology. These traditions emphasize harmony with nature, cosmic energy flows, and ancestral spirits. Many elements of these beliefs contrast with a biblical worldview. Practices like divination, fortune-telling, and seeking insight through astrology are prominent within these systems.

Daoism, for instance, does not acknowledge a personal Creator God. Instead, it promotes spiritual balance and impersonal forces like the "Tao" (the Way). This makes the chart a spiritual tool rooted in a worldview different from Christianity.

Why Christians Should Avoid This Practice

While the Chinese Birth Chart may seem harmless or fun, it poses serious spiritual dangers. First and foremost, it represents a form of divination—something Scripture explicitly forbids. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 warns against diviners, sorcerers, and those who interpret omens. Engaging with such tools opens a door to deception and distances believers from relying on God’s guidance.

By seeking knowledge about a child’s future through mystical means, we replace trust in God with confidence in human or spiritual systems apart from Him. This undermines faith in God’s sovereignty and can subtly lead a believer into broader New Age practices—astrology, energy healing, or manifestation—further pulling them away from Christ.

Additionally, what starts as curiosity can quickly become dependency. People may begin consulting such charts for future decisions, believing in their accuracy instead of surrendering their plans to God’s will (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Consequences of Dabbling in New Age Modalities

When Christians entertain New Age or occult practices, they risk spiritual confusion, a hardened heart toward God, and an open door to demonic influence. These practices can hinder prayer, disrupt peace, and create spiritual strongholds. Over time, they erode a person’s confidence in God’s Word, replacing it with uncertainty and superstition.

Satan often disguises lies as light. A simple chart predicting gender may seem trivial, but the spiritual roots make it incompatible with a life of obedience and faith.

Jesus Is the Only Way

John 14:6 declares, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” True peace, healing, and future hope come from trusting in Jesus, not ancient charts or mystical predictions. He alone knows the future (Jeremiah 29:11) and holds each life—including the life of an unborn child—in His hands.

When you are uncertain about your child’s health, gender, or future, bring your concerns to God in prayer. Trust that He is good, sovereign, and faithful. Believers are called to walk by faith, not by sight or charts.

Conclusion

Though culturally intriguing, the Chinese Birth Chart is more than just a game. Its origins and spiritual foundations are incompatible with the Christian faith. Instead of turning to mysticism for answers, Christians must fix their eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). He alone is trustworthy, and in Him alone can we place our full confidence for the future.

Methods of discernment:

• Who was the founder of this modality?

• What was his/her spirituality?

• What culture did it come out of?

• What were their beliefs?

• Who is their God or gods?

Many occult practices in Christianity need to be discerned.  Another method of discernment is the Word of God. The word of God is our measuring stick. The more we read the word, know the word, and have a relationship with the Lord, the more we discern right and wrong. We perish from a lack of knowledge.

Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.”
