Why Christians Must Not Celebrate Halloween or Harvest Night

Introduction: The Lie of “Harmless Fun”

Every October, Christians around the world face the same question: “Is Halloween really that bad?” Some say, “It’s just candy and costumes — my child is dressing as a princess, not a demon.” But before you shrug it off as harmless, consider this: Halloween is not a game. It has deep occult roots and spiritual consequences for those who participate.

The Bible warns,

“Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” — Ephesians 5:11

What many believers call “fun” is actually fellowship with the kingdom of darkness.

1. The Dark Roots of Halloween

Halloween began in ancient Celtic paganism — Samhain — a night when the dead were believed to walk among the living. Rituals, animal, and even human sacrifices were made to appease demonic entities.
Today, it remains the most important day on the satanic calendar. Former satanists confirm that this night is used for rituals, curses, and blood sacrifices worldwide.

As ex-Satanist John Ramirez testified:

“I spent 25 years in Satanism. I had a demonic wedding on Halloween. I used to prepare for weeks to curse regions, destroy lives, and dedicate souls to the devil on that night. Why would Christians want to celebrate the devil’s high holiday?”

That chilling statement should stop every believer in their tracks.

Halloween was not celebrated in the United States until the mid-1800’s. The Irish flooded New York in 1845-46 fleeing the Potato Famine. They brought with them old Druid Holidays called Samhain,  (pronouced (Sowen), Celtic holiday which marks the end of summer. It was important to celebrate the living and the dead that came together, the spirits of the underworld. The Druids were the pagan priests of the Celts. They were idolaters, occult practitioners and witches. Their holiday was known as the Lord of Death.

This pagan god was shown as a ghostly, skeleton holding a sickle in his hand. He later came to be known as “The Grim Reaper.”

Deuteronomy 12:31 You must not worship the LORD your God in their way, because in

worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the LORD hates. They even burn

their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifice to their gods.

2. The Spiritual Atmosphere of Death

Halloween glorifies everything Christ came to defeat — death, fear, darkness, and witchcraft.
The Lord said in John 10:10,

“The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy.” John 10:10

When you decorate your home with tombstones, skeletons, and ghosts, you are aligning with a spirit of death. You may think it’s pretend, but in the spiritual realm, symbols are invitations.

As another former occult practitioner explained:

“If even one home in a neighborhood celebrates Halloween, that entire area becomes a hotspot for demonic activity that night.”

That means your street, your neighborhood, and your children are exposed to spiritual portals opened through this dark celebration.

The Celtics worshipped, The Lord of Death called together the wicked souls that within the past twelve months had been condemned to inhabit the bodies of animals in punishment for their evil deeds. This demon god then allowed them to return to their former homes to visit the living.

To appease the Lord of Death and keep the spirits from harming the people, Druid priests led the people in worship ceremonies in which horses, cats, black sheep, oxen, human beings and other offerings were rounded up, stuffed into wicker cages and then burned to death.

Why Christians Must Not Celebrate Halloween or Harvest Night

Druid ceremonies mainly centered on sacrifice by shooting to death by arrows, or by impaling, and the burning of human and animal victims. “They deemed it indeed a duty to cover their altars with the blood of captives and to consult their deities through human entrails.” The consecrate a human being to death, drive a dagger into his belly, above the abdomen, and draw conclusions about events to come from the squirming of the victim and the spurting of his blood. They believed the immortal gods can only be appeased, and man’s life redeemed, by offering up human sacrifice.

The Druid priests and Celtic people would gather together on these pagan worship days either in a grove of trees, or in a stone circle. There are many stone circles in the British Isles and in Western Europe. Stonehength most famous.

The pagan worship rituals of the Druids originated, it turns out that they go all the way back to the time of Nimrod.  Many of Halloween’s customs are derived from the ancient Baal Festivals from the taking of omens from the struggles of victims in the fires of druidic sacrifices. The worship of Bel (Moloch) and Astarte was very early introduced into Britain along with the Druids, the priests of the groves.

3. Trick or treat

Trick or treat originated not with the Irish Celts, but with ninth-century European custom called Souling.

The pagan belief that spirits rise from the grave and roam the earth on the evening prior to November 1st led to all kinds of superstitious behavior. The “treat” part of this holiday came from attempts to “buy off” evil spirits by presenting them with gifts. It was believed that one way to “exorcise” spirits was to present them with treats. Because the souls of the dead were thought to return to their original homes and visit relatives, people would set out food as a form of treat. These included dainties, sweets, and cakes of bread which came to be called “soul cakes.” If satisfied, the spirits would leave in peace. If not, they would cast spells and cause absolute havoc to the inhabitants of the home.

On November 2, All Souls Day or sometimes called; Day of the Dead, which is an early Romanist holiday, where poor Roman Catholics would walk form village to village begging for “soul cakes,” made out of square pieces of bread with currants. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in a place called Limbo or Purgatory for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul’s passage to heaven.

The pagan roots that eventually grew into the Catholic religion as doctrine, which is not biblical at all!

Halloween parties at school, work and homes is common. But unfortunately, at the same time, much of the focus of Halloween for many is still centered on horror, mutilation, death, devils, ghosts, witches, evil and the occult. Present day adults who practice witchcraft still lay claim to Halloween as their special holiday as the day to worship their pagan gods and goddesses and Satan with demonic rituals.

4. Jack o Lanterns

A trademark of Halloween is the carved pumpkin. It is known as a Jack o’ lantern. In ancient times, many people carved frightening faces into produce and put small candles inside them to scare away wandering spirits on the eve of Samhain.  It is said that a man named Jack played dishonest tricks on the Devil, thereby escaping the fires of hell. However, after Jack died, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven.

Black Cats

Throughout history, the black cat has been blamed for many wrongs of the world. Even today, these animals conjure up mystic tales and images of witchcraft. Many believed that witches could change into cats nine times which may be the origin of the superstitious belief that cats have nine lives.

Many Druids believed that cats were in fact reincarnated human beings and the Druid priest had the ability to see the future through them.

5. The Curse of Compromise

Even many churches have been deceived — renaming the night “Harvest Festival” or “Trunk or Treat.” But changing the name does not change the spiritual reality.

American culture has turned Halloween into a secular (i.e. non-religious) holiday. Even so, Christians ought to apply biblical discernment carefully as they consider to what extent they will participate in any Halloween-related activities. The unbelieving society, Halloween as an opportunity to celebrate sexual sin, drunkenness, grotesque depravity, and even demonic activity.

John Ramirez warns:

“If you celebrate Harvest Night on October 31st, you’re still celebrating Halloween. The devil doesn’t care what you call it — he only cares that you participate.”

The Word of God makes it clear:

“You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too.” — 1 Corinthians 10:21

When we compromise truth to appear “culturally relevant,” we open doors for curses to enter our homes, families, and even our churches. Ramirez explained that celebrating Halloween brings a 4-to-5 generational curse into families — the same demonic spirits that are invoked that night attach themselves to bloodlines.

As believers, we are called to flee from the sinful deeds of darkness, not revel in them. So any type of Halloween costume, activity, or party that celebrates those things should be totally avoided. Many Scripture passages could be cited to make this point. Ephesians 5:8–12.

How did it get into the church?

The exact year that All Hallows or All Saints Day’s was substituted for the pagan Samhain is uncertain. Some believe it was declared by Pope Gregory in the 6th century A.D. Others think that it was by Pope Gregory III (731-741 A.D.). Still others believe it was introduced by Pope Boniface in 615 A.D., and transferred by Pope Gregory IV 100 years later. Regardless of the confusion regarding these dates, the Catholic Church and much of the world still observe this celebration, and no matter how hard men have tried to whitewash the day, shreds of the old pagan superstitions stubbornly cling to Halloween.

3. The Curse of Compromise

Christians should not join with our unbelieving society in celebrating violent, ghoulish, or macabre themes. Moreover, our culture’s preoccupation with the “spooky” and the “scary” desensitizes their hearts and diverts their attention away from that which is truly terrifying: namely, the judgment of God that awaits all who die apart from Christ (Heb. 9:27; 10:31).

Certain practices associated with Halloween can be seen as opening pathways to malevolent spiritual influences. Some interpret scripture, such as Ephesians 6:12, which states, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms," to suggest a spiritual battle that is intensified during times when occult practices are more prevalent.

From this viewpoint, there's a concern among some Christians that engaging in certain Halloween activities could inadvertently expose them to spiritual attacks or curses from individuals involved in satanic or occult practices, who may see such nights as opportune times for their rituals. This belief underscores a call for discernment and spiritual vigilance during this season.

6. The Power of Blood and the Deception of Candy

Many Christians do not realize that witches and warlocks pray over Halloween candy before it ever reaches your child’s hand. As one testimony stated:

“Candy and costumes are not innocent. They are prayed over, cursed, and dedicated to demonic spirits.”

In the spiritual world, blood is currency — it seals covenants and empowers dark works. But praise God, the blood of Jesus Christ is the highest currency in heaven and earth! It breaks every curse, severs every legal right, and washes away every sin. People disappear in October for blood sacrifices. Animal sacrifices are given. The purer the person is, the higher the bargaining they have with demonic forces, that's why children disappear. They are being sacrificed along with street people.

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.” — Revelation 12:11

When believers participate in the devil’s holiday, they trample on the very blood that was shed to set them free.

7. The Identity Crisis

Costumes may seem innocent, but the spiritual message is profound. When Adam and Eve sinned, they lost their identity in God. The devil has been stealing human identity ever since.
Ramirez warns:

“When Christians put on costumes, they change their spiritual identity. Even if you dress as a princess or superhero, the act itself represents the enemy’s counterfeit — identity theft in the spirit realm.”

The enemy loves when believers “pretend” to be something they’re not — it mirrors his deception in Eden.

Why Christians Must Not Celebrate Halloween or Harvest Night

8. What Happens Spiritually on Halloween

  • Portals open through rituals, blood sacrifices, and global covens.

  • Curses are released into neighborhoods, families, and churches that compromise.

  • Children are spiritually marked through participation, often leading to nightmares, fear, rebellion, and confusion.

  • Demonic infestations rise immediately after Halloween — ministries worldwide report an increase in deliverance cases each November.

In Romans 14–15 and 1 Corinthians 8–10, where the apostle Paul gives instruction to those who were wondering if it was acceptable for believers to eat food offered to idols.

International Celebrations

The Bible explains that Satan has deceived the whole world (Rev. 12:9). To one degree or another, everyone has been deceived by him. This truth is evident in the universal observance of Halloween.

Though Samhain was the pagan lord of the dead, this holiday has been observed by nearly every nation on earth. Though its name may vary, Samhain continues with the same theme of death.

Samhain was celebrated with the idea that the soul is immortal and the spirits of the dead roam the earth. The Celts believed that the spirits of good men went to paradise while the souls of those who did evil would be either reincarnated in the form of animals or would sit in a shallow grave for the next year. The Catholics believe something similar and teach that the soul goes to heaven, hell, or purgatory. The only chance these disembodied spirits had for a decent afterlife was to return on the eve of Samhain and try to make some sort of transition to a new body.

Samhain is not just an ancient pagan festival. It is still celebrated by the occult today. One Wiccan website states that it is considered to be one of their most important holidays.

Is it Good Clean Fun?

The customs of Halloween were, and still are, celebrated by pagans. God condemns such observances. Even if we reject the dark imagery of witches and goblins, and dress up as a ballerina or Superman in the name of fun, rename the day as some sort of harvest festival, we are actually serving demons and not God!

9. A Call to Repentance and Separation

The Word of God is clear:

“Come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing.” — 2 Corinthians 6:17

If you’ve ever celebrated Halloween, hosted a Harvest Night, decorated your home, or allowed your children to dress up — it’s time to repent. Renounce every agreement made with darkness, knowingly or unknowingly. Close the door and cleanse your home through prayer and the blood of Jesus Christ.

Pray:

“Father, I repent for participating in Halloween or any form of darkness. I renounce every curse, covenant, and spirit connected to these celebrations. I plead the blood of Jesus over my life, my home, and my generations. Deliver us from every stronghold, and fill us with Your light. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”

10. Final Warning

Beloved, Halloween is not a harmless holiday — it is a satanic ritual disguised as fun. As John Ramirez said:

“Without Halloween, there is no devil’s victory. Without the Cross, there is no salvation. Choose this day whom you will serve.”

Let the Church rise up and be holy again. Let’s not substitute truth for entertainment. God is calling His people to discernment, holiness, and separation from the world.

“You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.” — 1 Peter 2:9

Don’t let your children dance with death when Jesus died to give them life.
