The Dangers of Astral Projection

 
Astral projection, also known as out-of-body experience (OBE), is a fascinating and controversial topic that has captivated spiritual seekers for centuries. Astral projection is the belief that one's consciousness can separate from the physical body and travel to different locations in the astral plane. This article delves into the origins of astral projection, its fundamental beliefs, and its spiritual implications, particularly about Christian theology. We will also explore the Christian perspective on OBEs and the potential dangers of engaging in such practices.

While out-of-body experiences have ancient roots, modern astral projection owes much to esoteric and occult movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. There isn't a single 'founder' per se, but several key figures popularized and formalized the practice. Helena Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society, wrote extensively about astral travel in her influential works, laying the groundwork for later developments. However, Sylvan Muldoon, through his collaboration with Hereward Carrington and later works, is arguably the most significant individual in shaping the contemporary understanding of astral projection. Muldoon, who experienced OBEs spontaneously from childhood, meticulously documented his experiences and developed techniques for consciously inducing them. His book, The Projection of the Astral Body, became a seminal text for aspiring astral travelers.

Astral projection rests on several key beliefs:

• Dualism: The belief that the mind or spirit is distinct from the physical body.
  
• Astral Body: The existence of a subtle energy body (the astral body) that is connected to the physical body by a 'silver cord'.
  
• Astral Plane: A non-physical realm that exists alongside the physical world, populated by various entities, landscapes, and dimensions.
  

Proponents of astral projection believe that during an OBE, the astral body detaches from the physical body and travels through the astral plane. This allows individuals to explore different locations, interact with astral entities, and gain insights into the nature of reality.

For many, astral projection is a spiritual practice to achieve enlightenment, expand consciousness, and connect with higher realms. Some practitioners believe it can facilitate communication with spirit guides, access past lives, and better understand the self. However, the spiritual implications are complex and depend heavily on one's worldview.

The Christian perspective on astral projection is generally cautious and often disapproving. The Bible does not explicitly mention astral projection, but several theological principles raise concerns. One central concept is the nature of truth. As stated in John 17:17, 'Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.' Christians believe that the ultimate truth resides in God's word, the Bible. Therefore, experiences gained outside of this revealed truth are viewed with skepticism.

Some Christians believe that OBEs might be demonic deceptions or simply psychological phenomena. The idea of separating the soul from the body raises questions about the nature of death and resurrection, which are central tenets of Christian faith. Additionally, the Bible warns against seeking spiritual experiences outside God's ordained channels (e.g., prayer, scripture, fellowship).

Scripture warns us against seeking spiritual experiences apart from God:

• Deuteronomy 18:10-12 – “There shall not be found among you anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens… For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord.”

• Isaiah 8:19 – “When they say to you, ‘Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,’ should not a people consult their God?”

• 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 – “Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light…”

From a Christian standpoint, venturing into the astral realm could expose individuals to negative spiritual influences. The Bible warns against practices that open doors to demonic activity. Furthermore, the pursuit of OBEs could lead to a detachment from reality and a distorted view of God's creation. On the psychological front, engaging in astral projection can be disorienting and potentially harmful, especially for individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions. The lines between reality and fantasy can become blurred, leading to confusion, dissociation, and even mental instability. It's crucial to approach such practices with extreme caution and discernment, or avoid them altogether.

Astral projection is a complex phenomenon with a rich history and diverse interpretations. While it offers the allure of spiritual exploration and expanded consciousness, it also presents potential risks, especially from a Christian perspective. Discernment, caution, and a solid foundation in biblical truth are essential for anyone considering exploring such practices. The Christian faith emphasizes seeking spiritual growth through prayer, scripture, and fellowship with other believers, remaining firmly grounded in the truth and promises of God.

Methods of discernment:

• Who was the founder of this modality?

• What was his/her spirituality?

• What culture did it come out of?

• What were their beliefs?

• Who is their God or gods?

Many occult practices in Christianity need to be discerned.  Another method of discernment is the Word of God. The word of God is our measuring stick. The more we read the word, know the word, and have a relationship with the Lord, the more we discern right and wrong. We perish from a lack of knowledge.

Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.”
