Incantations and the Demonic: Breaking Free Through Jesus Christ
Incantations: Deception Disguised as Power
An incantation is defined as a series of words said as a magic spell or charm, often recited to bring about a supernatural result. From ancient pagan rituals to modern-day occult practices, incantations are still widely used around the world—spoken or sung to invoke protection, healing, power, or guidance. But behind the surface of poetic words lies a sinister spiritual force that Christians must not ignore.
While incantations may seem harmless or even helpful, they are deeply rooted in occultism and are strictly forbidden in the Bible. Far from being spiritually neutral, incantations open the door to demonic activity and bring people under spiritual bondage, torment, and deception.
Origins and Cultural Roots of Incantations
Incantations have been found in nearly every ancient culture—from Egyptian burial texts and
Babylonian chants to Hindu mantras and African tribal rituals. Common in Wicca, shamanism, voodoo, and even modern New Age practices, these verbal rituals are intended to tap into unseen spiritual forces.
The spirituality behind these cultures was polytheistic and animistic. They believed in many gods, spirits, and elemental forces. They viewed incantations as tools to manipulate the spirit world for their benefit. But these gods and spirits were not neutral. According to Scripture, “all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens” (Psalm 96:5). The spiritual forces they called upon were demons in disguise.
In most cases, incantations were used not to worship the true God but to gain hidden knowledge, alter fate, or control circumstances—practices that oppose God’s command to trust Him fully and walk in obedience.
The Purpose and Mechanism of Incantations
Incantations function like spiritual keys. When spoken with belief and intent, they are designed to open unseen spiritual doors and invoke interaction with spirits—whether the practitioner realizes it or not. The repetition, cadence, and focus in chanting or speaking incantations act as a form of meditation that can lead to altered states of consciousness. But rather than entering into the presence of God, individuals become vulnerable to demonic influence.
What begins as curiosity or a desire for help can quickly spiral into torment. People often experience mental confusion, intrusive thoughts, voices, hallucinations, and emotional instability. What’s happening? They’ve granted legal access to demonic spirits who now begin to oppress or possess them.
Jesus warned in John 10:10 that “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” Incantations may promise light and wisdom, but in truth, they are tools of Satan to enslave souls under deception and suffering.
Who uses these incantations?
Witches often perform incantations, which are magical formulas that are spoken, sung, or chanted to trigger a magical effect on objects or people. Incantations can also be performed during prayers or ceremonial rituals. In folklore and culture, witches, wizards, and fairies are common performers of incantations.
Some witches in the dark side will send curses to Christians or to other witches
Witches are commonly believed to cast curses, which are spells or gestures that use magical words to inflict supernatural harm on someone. Curses can also involve using items from the target, such as hair, clothing, or bodily waste, to work magic against them. Other ways witches may cast curses include:
Inscribing runes or sigils on objects to give them magical powers
Burning or binding a wax or clay image of the person to affect them magically
Using herbs, animal parts, and other substances to make potions or poisons
Conjuring the spirits of the dead for divination or prophecy.
Some say that evil spells can include:
- Dividing
- Killing
- Making someone fall in love
- Making someone ill
- Destroying
- Leading to suicide
- Dividing spouses, the engaged, and friends
If a Christian has a relationship with the Lord and walks in obedience, these incantations cannot touch them. Unless the door is open through disobedience, sin, generational curses, etc.
While Christians may still face trials and hardships, God promises to be with them, sustaining them with His strength and comfort. Their protection is assured for those who trust in Him.
Mental Torment and Spiritual Consequences
There are so-called Christians that do incantations on others or to sum up the spiritual side. Many who practice incantations experience psychological breakdowns. They may begin seeing flashing lights, hearing disembodied voices, or battling suicidal thoughts. As their souls inch deeper into darkness, peace becomes elusive, and madness looms. What they thought would give them power now holds them captive. Basically, it puts you into bondage and captivity to the demonic realm.
Suicide, paranoia, self-harm, and deep depression are often linked to occult activity. These are not merely mental health issues; they are spiritual strongholds brought on by opening doors that God clearly commands us to keep shut.
God’s Clear Command: Do Not Engage
The Bible is unmistakably clear on God’s view of occult practices:
“When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone…who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer…For whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD.”
(Deuteronomy 18:9–12, ESV)
Why does God forbid these practices so strongly? Because they lead people away from Him and under the power of the enemy. Trusting in incantations is a direct denial of God’s Word and an embrace of counterfeit spiritual power.
Biblical Examples: The Cost of Disobedience
King Saul and the Medium of Endor (1 Samuel 28)
King Saul, once anointed by God, fell into deep rebellion and disobedience. When God stopped speaking to him through prophets or dreams, Saul turned to a forbidden source: a medium. He disguised himself and asked her to summon the prophet Samuel from the dead.
This act of necromancy and rebellion cost Saul his life. Samuel’s spirit rebuked him, and shortly afterward, Saul died in battle. This account shows that turning from God to lesser sources of power is not only sinful but deadly.
“So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the LORD... and consulted a medium, seeking guidance.”
(1 Chronicles 10:13)
The Slave Girl with a Spirit of Divination (Acts 16:16-18)
In the New Testament, Paul encountered a girl who had a “spirit of divination” and made her masters rich through fortune-telling. She followed Paul and his companions, crying out truths about them, but Paul was grieved—not because she was wrong, but because her source was demonic.
Paul cast the spirit out of her, demonstrating the superior power of Christ. Though she used no incantations in the passage, her spiritual bondage mirrors what many today experience when engaging in occult practices.
Empty Promises: The Lie of the Occult
The occult lures people in with promises of knowledge, control, and empowerment. But these are lies. The devil never gives without taking far more. What begins with curiosity ends in spiritual slavery.
The apostle Paul warned in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” That’s exactly what incantations do—they appear beautiful, mystical, and empowering, but lead to spiritual ruin.
Only Jesus Christ Sets the Captives Free
Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8) and set the captives free. There is no bondage too deep, no deception too strong, that His power cannot break. If you have engaged in incantations or any occult activity, turn to Jesus in repentance.
Renounce the works of darkness. Ask God for deliverance. Break every agreement you’ve made with the enemy—whether knowingly or unknowingly—and receive the healing power of Jesus Christ. His love brings freedom, peace, and eternal life.
Final Warning and Call to Truth
Incantations are not innocent. They are spiritual snares that invite demonic torment and sever your relationship with God. Scripture doesn’t say to experiment with them—it says to avoid them completely.
“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”
(Ephesians 5:11)
The enemy wants your soul, but Jesus gave His life to redeem it. Choose truth. Choose freedom. Choose the power of God over the counterfeit of the enemy. Let Jesus be your guide, your healer, and your Deliverer.
Methods of discernment:
• Who was the founder of this modality?
• What was his/her spirituality?
• What culture did it come out of?
• What were their beliefs?
• Who is their God or gods?
Many occult practices within Christianity require discernment. Another method of discernment is the Word of God. The word of God is our measuring stick. The more we read the word, know the word, and have a relationship with the Lord, the more we discern right and wrong. We perish from a lack of knowledge.
Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.”
