Humanism - A Biblical Examination of a Man-Centered Philosophy

 Humanism - A Biblical Examination of a Man-Centered Philosophy

A Biblical Examination of a Man-Centered Philosophy

Introduction

Humanism is not a new idea. It is a worldview deeply rooted in man’s attempt to define morality, truth, and purpose without God. While it often presents itself as a progressive, intellectual, and ethical system, humanism is fundamentally incompatible with biblical Christianity. At its core, humanism elevates man as the measure of all things, rejecting divine authority and replacing it with human reasoning. To understand why Christians must be discerning about this philosophy, it is important to examine its origins, beliefs, practices, and dangers.

What Culture Did It Come Out Of?

Humanism emerged during the Renaissance in Europe (14th–17th centuries) as a movement that sought to revive classical Greek and Roman thought. The Renaissance humanists focused on art, literature, and philosophy, celebrating human achievement and reason. While some early humanists still identified as Christians, they began to downplay Scripture’s authority, preferring reason and culture as guiding lights.

Later, secular humanism developed in the 19th and 20th centuries, fully rejecting God, miracles, and divine revelation. This worldview became the foundation for many modern philosophies, educational systems, and political movements, especially in the West.

What Were Their Beliefs?

At its heart, humanism teaches that:

  • Man is the center of existence – human beings, not God, define morality and truth.

  • Reason and science are supreme – only what can be tested, proven, or rationally explained is considered valid.

  • Religion is unnecessary – divine revelation is replaced with human progress, philosophy, and culture.

  • Ethics are relative – morality changes based on cultural, societal, or personal standards.

Humanists often promote ideals such as equality, freedom, and progress, but they deny that these values have roots in God’s Word. Instead, they believe humanity itself is the source of dignity and rights.

Who Is Their God or Gods?

In humanism, there is no personal God. The "god" of humanism is man himself—human intellect, creativity, and progress are elevated as the ultimate authority. In essence, it is the deification of humanity, echoing the same lie Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden: “You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5).

By removing God from the equation, humanism makes man the creator of morality, truth, and destiny. This worldview directly opposes Christianity, which teaches that God is the Creator, Sustainer, and Judge of all things.

What Is the Purpose of the Modality and Why Is It Used?

The purpose of humanism is to create a worldview that centers on man rather than God. It is used to:

  • Justify independence from divine authority.

  • Promote education and culture without biblical foundations.

  • Establish a moral system based on human reasoning instead of Scripture.

  • Provide meaning and purpose in life apart from eternal truth.

Humanism appeals to people because it flatters human pride. It tells us we are wise enough, strong enough, and good enough to guide our own lives without God. Yet Scripture warns: “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1).

Why Would Anyone Use This or Get Involved?

People are drawn to humanism because it offers freedom without accountability. It denies sin, judgment, and the need for a Savior. For those who do not want to repent and submit to God’s authority, humanism provides an appealing alternative that appears rational, intellectual, and liberating.

However, this so-called freedom leads only to bondage. Without God, man is left to his own corrupt nature, which brings moral decline, confusion, and despair. Romans 1:21-22 warns that those who reject God become “futile in their thinking” and though they claim to be wise, they become fools.

Is It Divination?

Humanism is not divination in the traditional occultic sense, but it is still rebellion against God. Divination seeks hidden knowledge apart from God, while humanism elevates human reason as supreme authority. Both lead people away from God’s truth and into deception. Ultimately, humanism aligns with the same satanic deception as witchcraft and idolatry: the exaltation of man and the rejection of God’s lordship.

Conclusion

Humanism may appear intellectual and enlightened, but it is a direct rejection of the biblical model of life and salvation. By placing man at the center of the universe, it denies the sovereignty of God and the saving work of Jesus Christ. Christians must reject humanism and instead hold fast to the truth that real wisdom, morality, and hope come only from the Lord.

As Colossians 2:8 warns: “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

Only in Christ do we find truth, freedom, and eternal life.
