Cosmology – The Study of the Universe or a Substitute for God?

Cosmology – The Study of the Universe or a Substitute for God?

Introduction

Cosmology is often presented as a purely scientific field—the study of the origin, structure, and development of the physical universe. It includes theories like the Big Bang and attempts to explain the totality of time, space, matter, and energy. But while many see cosmology as harmless science, its roots and spiritual implications reveal something deeper: the attempt to explain creation without the Creator.

🌍 What Culture Did Cosmology Come From?

Cosmology is as old as human civilization. Ancient cultures such as the Babylonians, Egyptians, Hindus, Greeks, and Chinese each had their own “cosmologies.” These were not scientific but mythological systems, where gods and supernatural forces explained the universe’s origin.

  • In Babylon, the gods Marduk and Tiamat battled to form the heavens and earth.

  • In Hindu cosmology, the god Vishnu rests on a serpent while Brahma emerges to create the world.

  • In Greece, philosophers like Plato and Aristotle speculated about the eternal cosmos and divine order.

These early cosmologies were pagan frameworks, blending astronomy, mythology, and worship of gods.

🌀 What Were Their Beliefs?

Ancient cosmologies generally believed:

  • The universe was eternal or cyclic (constantly reborn).

  • Gods or spirits controlled the forces of nature.

  • Stars and planets influenced human destiny (linking cosmology with astrology).

  • Creation was often violent, chaotic, and born of divine conflict.

In modern cosmology, these mythological gods are replaced with scientific theories such as the Big Bang and evolutionary development. But at its core, it still promotes the idea that the universe can be explained without God’s revelation.

🕉️ Who Is Their God or gods?

In ancient times, cosmology was inseparable from the worship of pagan deities. The heavens were seen as divine, and people bowed to the stars and celestial forces.

In modern cosmology, while it may reject literal gods, it often elevates the universe itself as godlike—self-existent, self-sustaining, and the source of life. Romans 1:25 warns of this very deception: “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”

🎯 What Is the Purpose of Cosmology and Why Is It Used?

The purpose of cosmology has always been to explain existence. Ancient cultures used it to support religion, rituals, and worship of gods. Modern cosmology uses it to replace faith in God with science.

It is used to:

  • Search for the universe’s origin without acknowledging a Creator.

  • Promote naturalistic explanations of life.

  • Provide a worldview that shapes philosophy, morality, and even politics.

For many, cosmology becomes a way to answer life’s biggest questions—Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going?—without turning to the Bible.

🔮 Is Cosmology Divination?

Not in the same sense as tarot or astrology, but cosmology can function like intellectual divination. Instead of seeking hidden knowledge from spirits, it seeks hidden knowledge from the stars, particles, and mathematics while denying God’s revelation in Scripture.

When cosmology becomes an ultimate belief system—trusting in the Big Bang or multiverse theories as substitutes for God—it becomes idolatry and deception.

Colossians 2:8 warns: “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition… and not according to Christ.”

🚫 The Biblical Warning

The Bible declares: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). True cosmology begins with God as Creator, not random explosions or mythological gods. Any attempt to explain creation apart from Him is a counterfeit.

Hebrews 11:3 says: “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”

Christians must be careful not to embrace cosmological theories that contradict God’s Word. Science can explore how the universe functions, but it cannot replace the truth of who made it and why.

✅ Conclusion

Cosmology has shifted from pagan myths to scientific theories, but its danger remains: it explains creation while rejecting the Creator. Whether through gods of old or modern Big Bang narratives, cosmology without God leads to false worship.

True answers are not found in endless speculation about the stars but in the eternal Word of God. Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created (Colossians 1:16), is the only source of truth, purpose, and salvation.
