Should Christians Pray to Mary or the Saints? The Shocking Truth Revealed
🚫 Should Christians Pray to Mary or the Saints? Absolutely Not.
The truth is bold and clear—praying to Mary or the “saints” is not biblical. In fact, it is necromancy—communication with the dead—a sin that Scripture condemns in both the Old and New Testaments. This unholy practice opens demonic portals and can cause spiritual oppression, torment, confusion, religious bondage, and even physical affliction.
📜 What Does the Bible Say About Necromancy?
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (KJV) says:
"There shall not be found among you... a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD."
Leviticus 20:27 commands:
“A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit... shall surely be put to death.”
When someone prays to a dead "saint" or to Mary, they are essentially calling upon a familiar spirit. These spirits are demons impersonating the dead to deceive and gain access.
⚔️ King Saul's Judgment for Necromancy
The story of King Saul in 1 Samuel 28 illustrates the seriousness of this sin. Saul sought a medium to speak with the dead prophet Samuel. But the spirit that answered was not Samuel—it was a demon in disguise. As a result, Saul lost his life and kingdom.
1 Chronicles 10:13-14 confirms:
“Saul died for his transgression... and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit.”
🧿 Catholicism and the Introduction of Necromantic Traditions
The Catholic Church did not emerge immediately after Christ’s resurrection—it evolved, blending early Christianity with pagan Roman practices.
Pagan Influence:
-
Praying to multiple saints (many of which are adapted from Roman gods).
-
Using relics, statues, incense, and rituals resembling ancient Babylonian mystery religions.
-
Venerating Mary as a mediatrix, even calling her "Queen of Heaven"—a title given to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar.
Yet, 1 Timothy 2:5 is clear:
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
Praying to Mary or saints is adding false mediators—this directly contradicts the Gospel.
🔥 Jesus’ Words on the Dead
Jesus confirms in Luke 16:19-31 (rich man and Lazarus) that communication between the dead and the living is not allowed. Not even a warning from the dead can return to help the living. Abraham tells the rich man’s spirit:
“...they have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.”
(Luke 16:29)
The lesson: We must seek the living Word of God, not the dead, for guidance.
Even when Moses and Elijah appeared during the Transfiguration, they spoke only with Jesus, not the disciples. God interrupted Peter’s attempt to honor them by saying:
“This is My beloved Son: hear Him.”
(Luke 9:35)
👑 Was Mary Ever Meant to Be Worshiped?
Absolutely not. Though blessed among women, Mary was a human, a vessel—not a co-mediator.
She herself declared her need for salvation in Luke 1:47:
“My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.”
Jesus consistently addressed her as "woman" (John 2:4, John 19:26)—not "mother"—showing that she was not to be exalted above others. He even distanced Himself when people tried to elevate her.
“Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?”
(Matthew 12:48)
☠️ Demonic Manifestations from Praying to Saints
What happens when you pray to the dead?
-
You grant legal access to demons (familiar spirits).
-
You may experience religious bondage, confusion, guilt, spiritual blindness.
-
People suffer from torment, nightmares, anxiety, physical sickness, and relational destruction as a result of demonic influence.
These doors must be shut through repentance and deliverance.
✝️ Deliverance Prayers of Repentance
Pray this aloud with faith:
“Father God, I repent for praying to anyone other than You. I renounce every form of necromancy, idolatry, and communication with the dead in Jesus’ name. I close every demonic portal I have opened through this sin. I break all unholy ties to Mary, saints, or ancestors and command every familiar spirit to leave me now in Jesus’ name! I plead the blood of Jesus over my spirit, soul, and body. I receive your forgiveness and ask for cleansing and freedom. Amen!”

Scripture must be the ultimate authority—not church tradition, feelings, or religious icons.
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
— Hosea 4:6
From the very beginning, the early Church followed the pure teachings of Jesus Christ and the apostles. However, as time progressed, human traditions began to creep into the Church, and by the third century, doctrines and practices that were never endorsed in Scripture began to take root, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church. Among the oldest of these practices were praying for the dead and making the sign of the Cross, both of which were introduced around 300 A.D., long after Christ’s resurrection. These were not biblical practices but man-made rituals borrowed from surrounding cultures steeped in paganism.
Soon after, in 320 A.D., wax candles were introduced into the church, originally used in pagan temple worship. By 375 A.D., the veneration of angels and the spirits of the dead—who were now being called saints—became widespread. The daily celebration of the Mass began around 394 A.D., departing from the original breaking of bread and remembrance taught in Acts 2. In 431 A.D., the worship of Mary as “Mother of God” was officially sanctioned at the Council of Ephesus. Yet, this title predates Christ—it was originally a pagan title applied to Semiramis, the mother-wife of Nimrod, queen of ancient Babylon. Priests in Babylon even wore fish-like head garments remarkably similar to what Catholic bishops wear today. Alongside this, spring fertility rites for the goddess Ishtar included eggs, rabbits, and crucifixes—elements still strangely connected to Easter, revealing the spiritual pollution that crept into Church traditions.
By 500 A.D., clergy began to dress differently from the laity, resembling pagan priesthoods. In 593 A.D., Gregory the Great introduced the doctrine of purgatory, completely foreign to the Bible. Latin was imposed as the church’s official language, even though 1 Corinthians 14:9 warns against praying or teaching in unknown tongues. The Catholic Church began promoting prayer to Mary and other deceased “saints,” despite Scripture’s clear command to pray only to God (Matthew 11:28; Acts 10:25-26; Acts 14:14-18). This is nothing less than necromancy—communicating with the dead—which is strictly forbidden (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
The rise of the papacy in 610 A.D., when Phocas bestowed the title of “universal bishop” to the bishop of Rome, reveals how political power and religious ambition corrupted the church. Jesus never gave Peter such authority (Luke 22:24-26; 1 Corinthians 3:11). There is no biblical or historical evidence that Peter was ever in Rome as a pope. By 709 A.D., kissing the Pope’s feet—an ancient emperor-worship tradition—was introduced. This practice directly violates Acts 10:25-26 and Revelation 22:9, where even angels refused worship.
In 750 A.D., Pope Stephen II received civil power when Pepin of France gave him Rome and surrounding lands. But Jesus explicitly rejected earthly kingship (John 18:36). The worship of the cross, images, and relics became official by 788 A.D., decreed by Empress Irene—who had violently usurped her son’s throne. Scripture calls this idolatry (Exodus 20:4; Psalm 115). By 850 A.D., holy water was introduced. In 890 A.D., the veneration of Joseph began, again without biblical basis. In 965 A.D., bells were baptized by Pope John XIV, and in 995 A.D., the church began canonizing saints. But according to Romans 1:7, all born-again believers are already saints.
Fasting on Fridays and during Lent was enforced by 998 A.D., but 1 Timothy 4:1-3 warns of false teachers commanding abstinence from foods. By the 11th century, the Mass evolved into a “sacrifice,” and attendance was mandated. Yet Hebrews 10:10-14 says Christ’s sacrifice was once for all, never to be repeated. In 1079 A.D., priestly celibacy was imposed upon the clergy, contradicting the example of Peter and the qualifications for bishops found in 1 Timothy 3:2. The rosary was introduced by Peter the Hermit in 1090 A.D., reportedly copied from Hindu and Muslim practices. Jesus warned against vain repetitions (Matthew 6:7).
In 1184 A.D., the Inquisition was established to suppress “heresy” with violence, utterly contrary to Christ’s teachings of love and persuasion. By 1190 A.D., indulgences were sold—purchasing forgiveness. This corrupt practice sparked the Protestant Reformation. In 1215 A.D., Pope Innocent III declared the doctrine of transubstantiation, falsely teaching that the bread and wine literally became Jesus’ body and blood. However, Scripture teaches that this is a memorial, not a daily sacrifice (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:26). That same year, mandatory confession to a priest was introduced, although the Bible instructs us to confess our sins directly to God (1 John 1:9).
By 1220 A.D., the adoration of the wafer (Host) became official, essentially making an idol of bread. In 1229 A.D., the Council of Valencia forbade the Bible to laypeople, yet Jesus commanded all to search the Scriptures (John 5:39). In 1287 A.D., the scapular was invented—a cloth charm believed to offer spiritual protection, a clear example of fetishism. In 1414 A.D., the communion cup was withheld from the laity, defying Christ’s words in Matthew 26:27.
The doctrine of purgatory was declared dogma again in 1439 A.D. at the Council of Florence, despite Scripture’s assurance that Jesus' blood cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7-9). That same council declared seven sacraments, though Jesus only instituted two—baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 28:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:26). In 1508 A.D., the “Ave Maria” prayer was finalized and later approved by Pope Sixtus V. The Council of Trent in 1545 A.D. declared that human tradition held equal authority with the Bible. Jesus rebuked such thinking in Mark 7:7-13.
In 1546 A.D., apocryphal books were added to the Bible. These were never accepted by the Jewish canon. Pope Pius IV imposed a new Catholic creed in 1560, long after the original faith of the apostles. In 1834 A.D., Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Immaculate Conception of Mary, though Scripture states all have sinned (Romans 3:23), and Mary called God her Savior (Luke 1:47). In 1870 A.D., Papal Infallibility was declared—blasphemy, and a sign of the great apostasy foretold in 2 Thessalonians 2.
Revelation 13:18 speaks of the number of the beast, 666. Many scholars have found that the Pope’s Latin title, Vicarivs Filii Dei, adds up to 666 in Roman numerals—a chilling confirmation of spiritual corruption. In 1907 A.D., Pope Pius X condemned modern scientific discoveries that contradicted Church dogma. In 1930 A.D., he also condemned public schools. The same pope reaffirmed Mary as “Mother of God” in 1931 A.D., despite Luke 1:46-49 showing Mary never claimed such a title. Finally, in 1950 A.D., the dogma of Mary’s Assumption was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII—yet another invention without biblical basis.
What will be the next invention? The Roman Church claims it never changes, yet it has done nothing but create doctrines contrary to Scripture and mix Christian vocabulary with pagan rituals. Research shows that nearly 75% of Catholic rites and symbols have pagan roots. Cardinal Newman, in The Development of the Christian Religion, even admits that the Church adopted temples, incense, oil lamps, votive offerings, holy water, and vestments from paganism.
These doctrines are not minor errors—they are heresies, “doctrines of devils” (1 Timothy 4:1), and dangerous deceptions. Jesus rebuked religious leaders of His day, saying: "In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (Matthew 15:9). Both Peter and Paul warned that false teachers would arise and bring in damnable heresies (2 Peter 2:1-3). We must not follow human traditions that contradict God’s Word.
🔎 Summary: How the Catholic Church Adopted Pagan Practices
The early church (1st–3rd centuries) followed Jesus Christ alone. But as Christianity spread across the Roman Empire, it absorbed pagan rituals to attract converts:
-
Worship of mother-goddesses became “veneration of Mary.”
-
Temples became basilicas.
-
Feast days replaced pagan holidays.
By the 4th century, under Constantine, the church was deeply influenced by pagan Rome.
The actual heretics, therefore, are the Roman Catholics, and the faithful orthodox are the Evangelical Christians.
It is not commanded nor even suggested that we should celebrate His birth, nor is the date of His birth given. Surely, if God wanted us to keep it as an observance, He would have told us when it was. Then there is the keeping as a memorial of the resurrection of Christ from the dead, again, it is not admonished that we do so.
What is taught by Christ is to celebrate His death, which is the purpose for which He came! He observed it, even to the end/death, for what was the so-called "Last Supper", it was Passover! This He commanded to be kept in Ex.12:1-6. These verses point to the "Lamb of God who takes away the world's sins." They show precisely when He would be killed, even who would do it. No, you needn't think it an attack on the RCC, most all of Christendom is guilty of the same!
BRETHREN! The Word of God commands us to get out of Babylon, saying: "Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." (Rev. 18:4). All true Christians will remain faithful to the religion of Christ as taught in the Bible, and heed the warning of the Apostle Paul, who said: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other Gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." (Gal. 1:8).
Deliverance from being involved with the Catholic Church
First – clean house - Cleaning Your House - The first requirement for the Christian being DELIVERED is for him to remove from his house (or his room if it is not his house) all Catholic objects, symbols, medals, statues, pictures, holy cards, Catholic bibles, rosaries, crucifixes, missals, Catholic hymn books, relics, votive candles, shrines, sentimental Catholic mementos, etc. If an object is not his to remove, the person can anoint it with oil and bind its powers from him. If the person does not clean his house, DELIVERANCE will be only partial at best, because these things give legal grounds for demons to stay.
Renunciation of Catholic Church - We have found that people who are not yet ready to give up ties to Catholicism, but are willing to be DELIVERED in other areas, can receive some DELIVERANCE. However, for DELIVERANCE to be most effective, a sincere renunciation of the Catholic system is necessary. An example of such a prayer is the following: Heavenly Father, I renounce and repent of my participation in the (Roman, Greek or Russian) Catholic institution. I cancel the effects of all promises made to, oaths taken and rituals performed in the Catholic system by me, my parents, my husband/wife and their ancestors on both sides of the family. I renounce and cancel my allegiance to the Pope as head of The One True Church and to the Vatican as the Holy See. I renounce all false doctrines of the Catholic system:
1. The false doctrine that Mary is our mediator between man and God rather than His Son, JESUS - the Bible says in I Tim. 2:5, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man CHRIST JESUS." Also see John 14:6.
2. The false doctrine which glorifies Mary more than CHRIST - the Bible says in Acts 4:12, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Also, in Eph. 1:21, "His Name is above every other Name, not only in this world but also in that which is to come."
3. The false doctrine that makes Mary the Gate to Heaven instead of CHRIST - the Bible says in Jn. 10:1,7,9, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber...Then said JESUS unto them again, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep...I am the door: by me, if any man enters in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." In Jn. 14:6 "JESUS saith unto him; I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Also see Acts 4:12.
4. The false doctrine which gives Mary the power of CHRIST - the Bible says in Phil. 2:9-10. "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of JESUS every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth." Also in Heb. 7:25, "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them."
5. The false doctrine of praying to the dead - the Bible says in Deut. 18:10-11, "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer." (A necromancer talks to the dead.) Verse 12 says, "For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord:..."
6. The false doctrine of salvation through works - the Bible says in Eph. 2:8-9, "For by grace are ye save through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast."
7. The false doctrine of praying to angels - the Bible says in Col. 2:18, "Let no one disqualify you, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, taking his stand on visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind..." And in Rev. 22:8-9, "And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, see thou do it not: for I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the saying of this book: worship God."
8. I renounce and repent of all these false doctrines and all of the other false doctrines of the Catholic system, in the Name of JESUS CHRIST."
Breaking Curses And Soul Ties - At this point, it would be a good idea to pray the Soul Restoration Prayer if it has not been done so during this DELIVERANCE session. Then the person being DELIVERED can continue:
1. I break curses put upon me and my family by the Knights of Columbus or any other Catholic society. I cut all ties and holds between me and the strong man, Jezebel, Queen of Kingdoms, and the Great Harlot.
2. I declare to be broken any bonds, ties, or bindings that hold me to the Catholic system because of my Water Baptism, First Holy Communion, confirmation rituals, marriage vows or sacraments.
3. I break evil soul ties between me and the saints for which I was named. (Catholic people can be DELIVERED of evil spirits that are called by the person's specific baptismal and confirmation names. Call these spirits out using the saint's names and expect a manifestation, specifically, on each name.)
4. I break evil soul ties between me and the saints to which I have prayed. (Call out these evil spirits, using the saint's names.)
5. I repent of bringing Catholic statues or other abominable things into my home, as they come under the category of idols and accursed things. I have removed them from my person, home, car, and place of work. (Call out spirits from the person because they had these things. Example: "Any spirits that came in because of these things in the house of (name the person) must come out.")
6. I repent of Baal worship, which is one of the ancestors of the Catholic system. (Call out spirits of Baal, Priests of Baal, Shedding Innocent Blood, Ashtaroth, goddess - mother and wife of Baal, etc.)
7. I repent of idolatry, worship of statues, veneration of statues and relics, and possession of same. (Call out spirits by these names.)
8. I repent of calling priests, Father, for Mat. 23:9 says, And call no man your father upon the earth; for one is your Father, which is in heaven. (Call out evil spirits having priest's names.)
9. I break all evil soul ties with all priests and nuns with whom I have had contact or have held in high admiration. (Name the ones the Holy Spirit brings to remembrance and call spirits out by these names. Also, call out Fear of Priest and Nuns. If the person wanted to become or did become a nun, call out False Bride of CHRIST and Bride of Satan. Call out Guilt if the person felt they should have been a nun or priest but didn't become one. Also, call out Guilt For Leaving The Mother Church.)
10. I renounce praying to Mary and break all curses on me because of this. I cancel any dedication to Mary which may have been done in my behalf. (Call out spirits of Mary from the following: Madonna, Holy Mary, Our Lady, Notre Dame, Mother of God, Dei Mater, Deipara, Theotokos, Mater Dolorosa, The Sorrowful Mother, Queen of Heaven, Regina Coeli, Queen of Angels, Regina Angelorum, Star of the Sea, Stella Maris, The Virgin, The Blessed Virgin, The Black Virgin, Sacred heart of Mary, Hail Mary, Lady of Lourdes, Lady of Fatima, Lady of the Snows, (Other Ladies), The Virgin Mary, The Virgin Mother, Sancta Virgo Virginum, Holy Virgin of Virgins; Virgo Sponsa Dei, Virgin Bride of the Lord, Virgo Clemens, Virgin Most Merciful, Virgo Gloriosa, Virgin Most Glorious, Virgo Potens, Virgin Most Powerful, Virgo Praedicanda, Virgin Most Renowned, Virgo Sapientissima, Virgin Most Wise, Virgo Veneranda, Virgin Most Venerable, Hortus Clusus, Immaculate Conception, Mariology, Mariolatry, Queen of Peace, Queen of Righteousness, Queen of Martyrs, Mother Mary, Queen of Hell, Sovereign Mistress of the Devils, Fayy Fatima-Vexxa Myya (creates a very deep loyalty to Mary), Mariology, Mary Worship, Loyalty to the Church of Mary to the Death (occult in nature and practice), Sodality Fellowships (solidarity in Mary), Mary Seed of Wisdom.
11. I repent of the sins of my fathers during the Inquisition in Europe from 1200-1800 A.D. when millions of people were tortured, maimed, and killed as heretics because they owned Bibles and obeyed what was in the Bible instead of the church tradition. As the Catholic system has never repented of this, I do so now. I renounce these actions as sin and repent for myself and my family. (Call out spirits of Mental Torment, Murder, Burning, Torture, and all kinds of Infirmities.)
12. I break the curse of Jesuit intrigue and deceit over me; CHRIST became a curse for me. I renounce and repent of any association of myself, my parents, or ancestors (or husband/wife) back on both sides of the family from the beginning of the organization of the Jesuit Order. (Call out spirits of Political Intrigue, Lying, Religious Lying, Pieytheas, Deceit, Subterfuge, Treason, Manipulation, Murder, etc.)
13. I renounce and repent of saying, 'I was born a Catholic and I'll die a Catholic!' I break that curse and call out a Spirit of Death. We do all this in the Name of JESUS CHRIST. (Call out spirits of Death, which can include Death and Hades, Osmodeus, Appolyon, Premature Death, Death by Overdose, Death by Terminal Illness, Death by Accident, Death by Drowning, etc. Also, call out Destruction Spirits and Promises to Saints and Mary.)
Break the vow of poverty.
Loose spirits of Truth, DELIVERANCE, Adoption, Counsel, Might, Wisdom, Understanding, and Revelation Knowledge of the Word, life, etc., upon the person DELIVERED. (I Isa.11:2)
How the Catholic church Came about
Christian or Pagan? A Biblical Examination of Roman Catholic Doctrine
Is Roman Catholicism a continuation of biblical Christianity—or is it a mixture of truth and pagan tradition? With over one billion adherents worldwide and a powerful city-state known as the Vatican, the Roman Catholic Church stands as one of the most influential religious institutions on earth. But its foundation is not rooted solely in the teachings of Christ and the apostles. A close look reveals that much of its doctrine and ritual is derived from paganism, not Scripture.
The transformation began in 312 A.D., when Emperor Constantine claimed conversion to Christianity. But instead of forsaking paganism, Constantine built both Christian churches and pagan temples, blending them into a hybrid religion. While Christianity was officially recognized by Theodosius I decades later (380–381 A.D.), Constantine laid the groundwork by transferring his pagan authority—Pontifex Maximus, head of Rome’s pagan priesthood—to the Bishop of Rome. This title, along with Vicar of Christ and Bishop of Bishops, would later be inherited by the popes.
Before Constantine, Christians were persecuted for refusing to worship Roman gods. After Constantine, Christian identity was redefined. Pagan idols were renamed "saints," and statues of mother and child were rebranded as Mary and Jesus. Pagan festivals like Saturnalia became “Christmas,” and the feast of Isis morphed into the “Feast of the Nativity.” Halloween originated from ancient death cults, reclassified as All Souls Day. The persecuted Church had now become persecutor—targeting those who opposed the emperor-backed version of Christianity. Rome had not been transformed by Christ; it had absorbed Christianity into its pagan shell.
This is the true origin of Roman Catholicism—not a continuation of biblical truth, but a compromise with idolatry.
Source of Authority
While Christians uphold the Bible as the ultimate authority, the Catholic Church exalts its traditions and the rulings of the Pope above Scripture. They accept apocryphal books not found in the Hebrew canon, claiming them as inspired. Worse, they teach that only the Catholic Church has the authority to interpret Scripture—placing fallible men above God's Word (Mark 7:8–13; Colossians 2:8). The doctrine of papal infallibility, established in Vatican I (1870), declares that the Pope cannot err when speaking on faith and morals—a dangerous and unscriptural claim.
Jesus Christ and Salvation
Though Catholicism acknowledges Jesus as God, it denies the sufficiency of His finished work on the cross. They claim that salvation requires sacraments and good works, not faith alone in Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9). Catholics are taught that even after death, they must suffer in purgatory to atone for sins—denying Christ’s final words: “It is finished” (John 19:30). The Bible clearly teaches that Christ offered one perfect sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 10:10–14).
The Worship of Mary
Mary is exalted in Catholic doctrine far beyond biblical bounds. She is called "Mother of God," "Queen of Heaven," and even “Co-Redemptrix”—a title that elevates her to divine status. Prayers to Mary outnumber prayers to God in the rosary. Some popes have declared that Mary, not Christ alone, redeemed humanity. This is blatant idolatry. Mary herself acknowledged her need for a Savior (Luke 1:46–47), and Scripture declares that all have sinned (Romans 3:23). The Immaculate Conception (1854) and the Assumption of Mary (1950) are both manmade doctrines without biblical basis.
Salvation Through Sacraments
Roman Catholicism teaches that salvation begins with baptism and is maintained through the sacraments—seven in total: baptism, confirmation, Eucharist (Mass), penance, extreme unction, marriage, and holy orders. This “sacramental system” implies that grace is dispensed by priests, not received by faith. Baptismal regeneration is especially emphasized, including infant baptism, which has no scriptural support. But Scripture is clear—salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Romans 3:28; Galatians 2:16).
The Mass and Transubstantiation
The Mass is the centerpiece of Catholic worship, taught to be a continual, unbloody sacrifice of Christ. Transubstantiation—the belief that the bread and wine become the literal body and blood of Jesus—is central to this. But Hebrews 9:25–28 clearly states that Christ does not need to be re-sacrificed repeatedly. The Eucharist is meant to be a remembrance (Luke 22:19), not a repetition. Worshiping the communion wafer as God is idolatry, and to miss Mass is considered a mortal sin—binding millions under fear rather than the freedom of the Gospel.
Purgatory and Indulgences
Purgatory, though never taught by Jesus or the apostles, became official doctrine in 1439. Catholics believe that even those who die in God’s grace must be "purged" before entering heaven. They teach that prayers, indulgences, and Masses can shorten this suffering. This teaching undermines the sufficiency of Christ's blood (1 John 1:7–9). The sale of indulgences was a major spark for the Protestant Reformation. The very idea that salvation can be earned or bought is contrary to the heart of the Gospel.
Catholic Church Councils
Three major councils—Trent (1545–1563), Vatican I (1869–1870), and Vatican II (1962–1965)—define Catholic doctrine. The Council of Trent issued over 100 anathemas against those who believe in salvation by grace alone. It elevated tradition above Scripture and affirmed purgatory, indulgences, and transubstantiation. Vatican I declared the pope infallible. Vatican II, while appearing more modern, reaffirmed all prior councils and maintained every unbiblical tradition, including prayers to the dead, Mariolatry, the Mass, and salvation through the Church.
Despite outward changes, the heart of Roman Catholicism remains the same. As Pope John XXIII said at the opening of Vatican II, “I accept entirely all that has been decided and declared at the Council of Trent.” Vatican II did not reform the Church—it rebranded it. Even the New Catholic Catechism (1992) cites Trent over 90 times, confirming the same old doctrines in new language.
Final Thoughts: The Cost of Compromise
Roman Catholicism has created a system of works-based salvation, ritualism, and spiritual bondage that is far removed from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It mixes the truth of Christ with the lies of paganism—replacing faith with fear, and grace with control. The Bible says plainly: “In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9). The apostle Paul warned of those who would preach another gospel (Galatians 1:6–9), and Peter foretold false teachers bringing in damnable heresies (2 Peter 2:1).
Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). If you’ve been bound by tradition, ritual, or false teaching—come out from among them. Repent and turn to Jesus Christ alone. His finished work on the cross is enough. No priest, no sacrament, no ritual can save—only the blood of Jesus.
1 comment:
Dead? Who is dead? The Saints in God? If that is your (and your fellow protestants') belief then I am bereaved.
When I was an evangelical Protestant I was taught that I was exempt from the Last Judgement (the "Great White Throne") because I was saved, the LJ reserved for the unsaved/hellbound. While the unsaved/hellbound were sweating out their Judgment, my place was supposed to be before the Lord so that he could bestow the "rewards" that I might have coming to me.
BTW, contrary to the popular Protestant way of defining how Orthodox and Roman Catholics pray to the Saints, "pray" to the Saints in the O and RC traditions means to "ask of." As you would ASK a friend or your pastor to pray for you, we ASK OF the Mother of God and the Saints to pray for us knowing that the prayer of the Righteous "availeth much."
As for the charge against us that we "pray to the dead" (i.e. "necromancy"), we must answer, "Dead? Who is dead?" This is a most puzzling charge directed to those who are with the Lord!
Anyway, back to the Last Judgement. I just wanted to give you a friendly word of warning:
Please, dear Protestants, for your own sake cease your slanders, your libels against the Mother of God and the Saints. At the Last Judgement, it would be a terrible if the Holy Ones of God were to stand as witnesses against you.
Matthew 12:36
"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."
Since the ACTIVE Communion of the Saints is outside of your spiritual experience, it is best not to speak of things that you know nothing about, things of which you have no experience.
